Chris Schmitz: Head Coach

Chris has been a competitive swimmer since he was 8 years old. After a successful high school career, he competed collegially for St. Cloud State and the University Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He competed mainly as a sprinter and backstroker. During his swimming career, he earned 10 All American Awards, 5 school records, a conference record, 13 WIAC conference titles, and team MVP. He was a member of two Top 10 finishing teams at the Division III national meet. After he finished his competitive swimming career, he began coaching as a student assistant, and has been coaching swimming ever since. Along with coaching swimming, he has also worked in the health and fitness industry in multiple capacities for 20+ years. He holds certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine, USA Weightlifting, and Precision Nutrition.

 

Haley Foydel: Lead Age Group 2 Coach

Haley began her coaching career in Portland, Maine on the Greater Portland Swim Team, successfully expanding the team's senior and age group programs. After GPST, she was an age group coach for the Portland Porpoises Swim Club and worked with the National Age Group team for the Foxjets Swim Team. She has also designed and coached an open water swim program through the YMCA of Southern Maine, beginner's swim classes for Muslim women, and a one-off class for prospective Navy SEALS. Haley is a certified Level II swim coach through the American Swimming Coaches Association.

 

Kathryn Berg: Lead Age Group 1 Coach

Kathryn swam competitively for 15 years, starting at age 7 and completing her career as a collegiate athlete at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. She was born and raised in Fargo, ND, and swam for the FMY Gators throughout her career. She was a breaststroker from Day 1, but sometimes swam IM and butterfly. After college, she returned home to Fargo where she coached the Gators for 4 years. She has been with the Piranhas since 2016, and during the day works in HR at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of MN.

 

Jack Bowers: Lead Novice Coach

Jack is a Richfield native and has been coaching with the Piranhas since 2018. He also swam with the team for 6 years before making the transition to coaching. During his years as a Piranha swimmer, he competed as a butterflyer and long distance freestyler, earning an all-state achievement award and a team record for the 100 fly in his senior year of high school. Outside of Piranhas, Jack is also a licensed EMT, a barista, and is working toward earning firefighting certifications.  

 

Mary Ann Pichler: Assistant Coach

Mary Ann grew up in the Chicago suburbs and started swimming competitively at the age of 12. Her favorite race is the 100 butterfly and during her swim career, she earned spots on state and national teams. She started her coaching career by teaching through the Red Cross and local park districts while attending Northern Illinois University. Mary Ann is a member of the Piranhas Masters group and is an avid open water swimmer when things are not frozen. When not at the pool, Mary Ann lives in south Minneapolis with her husband and two daughters, who are also Piranhas, and is a Senior Developer for a healthcare system.
