Mission:  Metropolitan Swimming shall promote, develop and improve competitive swimming through education, support and opportunities for participation to a diverse swimming community.

To inspire and provide quality opportunities for our members to achieve excellence in the sport of competitive swimming.

Metropolitan Swimming stands with our community against racist actions, incendiary statements, and violence against any person. This means we must engage individuals throughout our member community in tough conversations about inequalities, identify the signs of systematic racism, and share proven solutions.

Thank you for your patience regarding information about the 2021 Metro Zone Team. Please read this email fully and forward along to appropriate staff. Due to added liability of COVID considerations, under the advice from council, the Board has voted that this year will be fully independent travel for all ages.  The Eastern Zone elected to have no qualifying times this year and allow each LSC to determine their own standards.

Meet Dates & Location

Collegiate School Aquatic Center 5050 Ridgedale Pkwy Richmond VA

Competition August 4th through August 7th (swimmers MUST be available the entirety of the meet)

Eligibility & Selection

Metro will be selecting the TOP 12 swimmers per gender per age group for this years’ meet.  The selection process will be based off of generated power points with consideration to both short course and long course times.  Eligible age groups per gender are 10 & under, 11-12, 13-14.  Swimmer’s age as of August 4, 2021, determines his/her age group for the entire meet.  Metro reserves the right to include swimmers with a disability that may fall out of the top 12 range. Applicants that fall into this category please reach out to the Age Group Chair.  Please make sure to apply based on this information!  Further eligibility considerations are below:

Eligibility of athletes with qualifying times for higher level meets:

  • Athletes who have competed in an Individual Event at the USA Swimming National Championships, the USA Swimming Spring Championships, US Open, the USA Swimming Junior Championships or a USA Swimming Trials Class meet are not eligible to enter and compete at an EZ AG Championship meet.
  • Athletes 13 years of age and over who have achieved a qualifying time in an individual event for any of the above meets prior to the entry deadline for the EZ meet, may not enter and compete in an EZ AG Championship meet.
  • Athletes 12 years of age or younger who have achieved a qualifying time in an individual event for any of the above meets but have not competed in that event at the stated meet, may enter and compete in that event in an EZ AG Championship meet.

Swimmers will be notified of their selection to the Metro Zone team at the conclusion of J.O. Championships via the contact information provided on their application.  If for any reason a swimmer selected is now unable to attend the meet, the next eligible swimmer in the category will be contacted.  There will be no alternates for the meet.

Athlete Apparel & Reimbursement

As selected swimmers will be traveling independently to the meet (no team travel), Metro will be defraying the cost of apparel as well as providing all qualified swimmers no more than a $200 reimbursement submission (see the Metro Swimming site for more information).  During the application process you will be directed to a specific Hobie swim link to sign up for your Zone Uniform.  There will be optional apparel that all swimmers will be able to purchase at their individual cost.

Time Commitment

By applying to be considered as one of this year’s zone team swimmers, you will be committing to be at the meet in its entirety.  Swimmers will need to be present at all of their age groups preliminary sessions and all applicable finals from Wednesday August 4th through Saturday August 7th.  There is a possibility of a team warm up on Tuesday August 3rd

Coaches’ application is available on the Metro Zone team website.  We will be seeking coaches for each age group and gender with a total of 6 coaches selected.  While swimmers will be traveling independently, coaches will be provided with full ground transportation (NY to VA) as well as individual rooms and meals paid.  All of the previous items as well as Zone coaches’ uniforms will be provided by Metro Swimming.  By agreeing to be a Metro Zone coach, you are committing your availability to attend the event from Tuesday August 3rd through Saturday August 7th (with a possible return travel date of Sunday August 8th).  Selected Zone coaches will also work collaboratively with the Age Group Chair/Zone Team Manager on their swimmer’s event selections and relays.

If you have any other questions regarding the Metro Zone team please reach out to Kate Hallex, Metro Age Group Chair.
