Dryland & Strength Training is offered in cooperation with our partners at Next Level Sports Physical Therapy LLC at our StonyBrook Swim Club pool side and in the winter at Felix Festa Middle School.

Next Level Sports Physical Therapy is a leading provider of sports physical therapy and physical fitness services directed to assess and improve movement and athletic performance, rehabilitate and return athletes to their sport after injury. Based in Woodcliff Lake, NJ, Next Level Sports doctors of physical therapy has treated the active and athletic population with 15 years of clinical expertise and sports performance coaching.

Dr. Jerry Yoo and Dr. John Mendenhall come from varied athletic backgrounds, as well as coaching experience in triathlons and swimming.  They understand what it takes to perform at the next level. Next Level Sports Physical Therapy will be working with Phoenix Aquatics athletes to improve their swim performance through evidence-based endurance and strength training techniques. 

The Next Level Aquatics Dryland Program will consist of two phases. During Phase 1, training will be focused on fundamental body movement, calisthenics, and dryland endurance based building activities. In Phase 2, athletes will engage in swim-specific functional training, metabolic conditioning, and plyometrics that will lead them into the competitive season.

Coaches Career & Experience

Dr. Jerry Yoo received his Master’s degree in Physical Therapy in 2001 from Columbia University and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Rutgers in 2004. He has been practicing as a lead clinician and supervisor for 15 years.

Dr. Yoo is President of Next Level Physical Therapy, where he specializes in sports performance and rehabilitation, and pediatric physical therapy. He is a certified Crossfit L1 and Endurance Coach. Other certifications he holds include Emergency Medical Responder and Trigger Point Dry Needling L1.

In addition to treating patients, Dr. Yoo enjoys competing in triathlons, obstacle course races, general fitness, sports performance, and nutrition. 

Dr. John Mendenhall recently joined the Next Level Sports Physical Therapy team after receiving his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Rutgers University. 

While attending The University of Maryland Baltimore County, Dr. Mendenhall competed as a Division 1 swimmer, where he achieved three team championships and an individual championship.

He enjoys competing in triathlons, circuit training, and strength training.  In his practice, Dr. Mendenhall places an emphasis on proper swim and exercise technique to ensure safe movement in order to optimize performance. 

Coach Valerie McQuade has worked with Dr. Yoo since 2013. She has been a teacher of elementary education for 10 years. She has been an assistant coach for sports-specific training programs to improve athletic programs in tennis, basketball, and football. She has also implemented a kid’s health and fitness program in her classroom.

She enjoys competing in triathlons and obstacle course races. In addition to competitive racing, she enjoys high-intensity training, strength and conditioning, overall health and program design
