Minneapolis Public Schools Weather Cancellations & Team App

Minneapolis Otters Administration

Our general policy is summarized below:
MPS typically issues two types of closures in the winter: snow closures and cold closures.

  • In case of cold closures (possible for Tuesday and Wednesday this week), we will typically run practices as scheduled, or release an adjusted schedule (early groups typically do not come in when school is closed). We do not have the same concerns as the districts, because kids aren't waiting outside for transportation.

  • In case of snow closures, which usually happen because of overnight accumulation (like today), we will decide by noon, based on ongoing snow cleanup, what our practice schedule will be. Often, roads are just fine for transportation by the time evening practices come along. We also do not have the same issues on buses getting down side streets.

  • In case of late-arriving snowfall, or snow coming during practice, we may also change or cancel practice if we think that swimmers would be better served going straight home.

  • On weather-closed days, we will try to run drop-in day camps to help parents who need last minute childcare at the Uptown location.

  • Morning practices at Uptown and Midtown for seniors and preseniors are not cancelled unless the entire facility is issuing a cancellation.

  • High school swimmers are welcome to attend senior practices when their practices at school are cancelled. They may bring non-otter teammates with notice.
