Meet Recap: Region VIII Sectionals

Mary-Catherine Ivey

March 11-14th the Blazers had 14 athletes attend Region VIII Sectionals in Jenks, OK. Not only was this our first travel meet and sectionals for almost exactly a year, it was the first Long Course meet that we have attended in nearly 18 months. While this, like most of our meets, did not feel “normal” our athletes represented the Kansas City Blazers proudly and with great success.

From our 72 individual events Blazers swimmers had best times in 62 of those events at 86%. Amongst our team there were 26 new Long Course qualifying times achieved; 22 new Sectionals times, 4 Futures times and 2 Summer Juniors times.

Annika Finzen and Kevin Glenn put themselves on the podium; Kevin with a second place in the 200 Back and both with third place finishes in the 100 Back.

Yassen El-Demerdash broke two of his own American records in the 100 and 200 Breast as he prepares for Trials in June for the Paralympic Games.

It was great to see our team competing at that level, testing and pushing themselves and achieving great things. This sectionals team has laid a great platform to move into the summer long course season from which we can build. Congratulations to our athletes for ending a trying season on such a high and we cannot wait to see where they go next!!!
