WELCOME TO BLUE WAVE SWIM TEAM

Registration for the 2020-2021 season is here. Current and returning members may register now through August 19th. New member registration will open on August 20th. Participation with Blue Wave requires a YMCA membership which must be completed before registration. New members and returning members who qualify for financial assistance, sibling discounts, or employee discounts must contact Coach Brent at brentgraham@kansascityymca.org or 816.858.0114 to complete registration. All others will complete their registration online. We look forward to welcoming you to the Blue Wave Family.

Before you register:

  • BE INFORMED - Read all the information below so that you know what to expect. Joining Blue Wave is a commitment that should only be made once you are fully informed. Understand that with the current state of affairs there is a high level of uncertainty this season.  Policies and practices may change at any time, and participants will be informed.

  • GET SET - Check your group placement or schedule a new swimmer evaluation. A list of placements can be found here. If you are not on the list or have a question about your placement, contact Coach Brent. Prior to registering, new members must schedule an evaluation Monday through Thursday from noon-1p and 6:45-7:15p in Platte City.  Space for the season is strictly limited, and registration is first-come, first-serve.

  • SIGN UP – Returning members must register online using the links below. Families that qualify for financial assistance, employee discount or sibling discount, must contact Coach Brent to register. He will be available Monday-Friday 10a-4p at brentgraham@kansascityymca.org or 816.858.0114. YMCA membership is required and must be completed before registering.

  • ACCOUNT SET-UP – Once registered, you will receive an email with instructions for logging in to our team website. You then will be ready to receive team communication and to start the season.

  • MEET THE FAMILY - Mandatory group parent meetings will take place over the first three weeks of practice. A schedule of these meetings is found below. Parents must participate for their athletes to practice. If you are absent, you must schedule a make-up meeting with Coach Brent. Make-ups must be completed by September 14th. These parent meetings provide the opportunity to meet coaches and other families, as well as to review season expectations for families and their swimmers.

  • HAVE FUN!  - Swimming is a big commitment, but it is also BIG FUN! We like to work hard here at Blue Wave, and we love to have a good time. When it comes to our team, they are one and the same.

Season Information

Swimmers can only register for Winter I at this time. Winter II registration will be sent out to all registered members after the start of the season. You must commit to a full session and are responsible for the entire cost. Your swimmer can, however, be removed from the team at any time until the first draft of a new session without incurring additional fees. Winter practices will be held between Parkville and Platte City. Due to a reduction in hours at Parkville, we will not have any full time swimmers at that location.

HS Season: August 24th – March 20th

This season we will be changing the HS registration process. This change will allow us to have athletes registered with Blue Wave for observed swims, USA practices and opportunities at USA meets through the HS season. Swimmers will register for the entire winter in one registration and be charged a small amount each month. HS swimmers will attend practice or contact their lead coach once a week during HS season. This will allow our coaches and swimmers to stay connected and focused on their year round goals while training HS.

General Practice Schedules:

August 24th – September 13th

September 14th – February/March

Swim Meets:

At this time we do not have a set meet schedule.  We do have the capacity and potential, however, to host meets at our facility. The possibility of spectator-less sessions is high to begin with and spectators may be allowed as the season progresses. Our goal is to provide at least two opportunities for sanctioned swims through the course of the season. While we don’t know exactly how volunteer assignments will be laid out, all families will be required to volunteer throughout the season.

COVID Procedures & Policies:

Through the winter sessions we will still be required to follow social distancing and COVID procedures. Read them carefully for both locations as they are important.

Before Leaving Home (applies to all BWST activities)

Any swimmer experiencing any of these symptoms below should remain at home and seek medical treatment:

  • A fever (100.4°F or higher)

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

  • Chills

  • Muscle pain

  • Sore throat

  • New loss of taste or smell

Swimmers must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to practice without the aid of fever reducing medications.

Swimmers will need to come dressed with a swim suit underneath clothes and must wear athletic shoes. No changing into suits will be allowed at the pool. Swimmers will arrive and depart in swimsuits. Restrooms will be available for emergency use only and will be sanitized as needed per CDC guidelines.

Health Checks, COVID-19 Tests, & Travel (applies to all BWST activities)

Any swimmer who has a fever (100.4 F or higher) or who reports “yes” to any of the health check questions will not be allowed to enter the centers. If a medical professional recommends a COVID-19 test, the swimmer cannot return until COVID-19 testing returns negative. Returning to the pool will require a doctor's note confirming the swimmer is cleared to return.

Parents must report a positive test of their child or any close contacts with an individual with a positive test to Coach Brent. In the case of a reported positive test, the coaching staff will alert those families who have swimmers that may have interacted with that individual, without naming the swimmer who tested positive.

If a swimmer will be traveling outside of the Kansas City metro area, you will need to notify Coach Brent in advance of your trip. If the location of your trip is to a location under travel restriction according to KS and/or MO Department of Health you will be required to quarantine for two weeks before returning to practice.

      • Do you currently have any symptoms of COVID-19?

      • Have you been in contact with someone confirmed to have COVID-19 or who has symptoms of Covid-19 in the last two weeks?

  • After their screening, swimmers will check in at the front desk using their membership key fob.

  • A mask will be required at all times in the facility until instructed by a coach that it is acceptable to remove them.

At this time, only YMCA members are allowed to enter the facility and there is a limit on the number of people in the facility. Due to these policies, no spectators are permitted for practice at this time. Family members who are also members are welcome to come in and use the facility.

Other Medical Considerations:

Swimmers who report an injury or illness at practice that require a modification or special care will result in the coach and swimmer calling or speaking to the parent at pickup. If at the discretion of the parents the swimmer will not be able to return to normal practice the next day, a doctor's note will be required with specification of limitations and duration before the swimmer is allowed back into the pool. A note will also be required if the illness or injury habitually prevents a swimmer from completing a full practice. Swimmers will not be allowed to deviate from these instructions until an updated note is provided or the duration on the first note is exceeded. We want to take swimmer injury and illness seriously and also need to teach our swimmers to understand the difference between these conditions and discomfort.

BWST submits registrations at the beginning of each short course season for all active members of the team. If you feel you do not need to pay this fee, please contact the Director with questions. This fee will be drafted from the meet fees payment on file on September 15th.

Practice Fees:

Fees are split equally over four months and drafted on the 15th of every month, or paid in full at the start of the season. The fee varies by practice group based on pool time & practice hours. HS swimmers that participate in swimming for their school will register for both sessions under the HS activity for their practice group and pay a discounted rate each month.

YMCA Membership Fee:

This is a monthly or annual fee paid to the Y. All swimmers must be full program Y members in order to compete in Y dual, area and district meets.

Meet Fees:

Meet fees will be drafted from a credit/debit card on file the week preceding a meet. Participants will receive a notification of charges 48-72 hours before they are processed. During that time, families must review the charges. If there are any questions or concerns, contact Coach Brent. If any fee is unable to be processed because a credit/debit card is declined or expired, a $5 late processing fee will be incurred. Once complete, email Coach Brent with a subject of Meet Fee Payment Method and include the last four digits of your credit/debit card and the security code from the back of the card.

Need is reassessed every six months. Financial assistance can be applied for through USA swimming to help with the USA Registration Fees.

Sibling Discount: If you have more than one child participating, you receive a 10% discount on your second child and beyond. This discount only applies to practice fees.

Failure to have needed equipment may result in the swimmer sitting out for a portion of practice or being asked to leave if they do not have the equipment habitually. Swimmers are encouraged to have their equipment in a mesh bag for storage and practice. We will not have equipment for swimmers to borrow. Swim Quick will be on site September 1st-2nd to purchase equipment.
