Minutes of Board of Directors Meeting

Held on March 10, 2007 at the Wichita Swim Club, Wichita KS

Members in Attendance: Linda Bailey, Scott Bliss, Jolisa Buchner, John Dicus, Tom Kleiboeker, Gary Ledford, Mike Lewellyn, Pete D. Malone, Sandy Miller, Eric Nelson, Joe Ogilvie, Bill Rose, Dulcy Sellon, Mike Soderling.

John Dicus began the meeting by raising the question of which bidders Missouri Valley should select for the short course 2008 Division II meet. Seven teams had bid for the championship meet. The Board decided that one of the three bids would go to Springfield for the East meet since they had agreed to rotate the meet hosting with Missouri State Aquatics at the East site. Team Dolphins and Tsunami Swim Team as hosts in 2007 were also eliminated. The Board decided to award the Kansas City Storm with the central site for the Division II meet. The Lawrence Aquahawks and Olathe Aquatics had both bid for the West location to be held at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center. Discussion led the Board to decide to award the west meet to the Lawrence Aquahawks for 2008. It was also suggested that Olathe and the Aquahawks discuss the possibility of rotating the hosting obligations for this meet at the Lawrence pool. Eric Nelson made the motion that the Board recommend to the House of Delegates that the Division II short course 2008 championship meets be awarded as East to Springfield Aquatics, Central to Kansas City Storm, and West to Lawrence Aquahawks. Jolisa Buchner seconded the motion and all voted in favor of the motion.

Gary Ledford pointed out that the USAS Convention this fall will be September 25 through September 29 so the Missouri Valley fall meeting will need to be after that weekend. The Board decided to schedule the Missouri Valley fall meeting for October 13 with the location to be determined.

Four clubs, the Wichita Aquashocks, Topeka Swim Association, Emporia Aquatics and Team Dolphins, had bid for the long course Division II meet in 2008. Team Dolphins plan to host the meet at the new Tiffany Springs pool. The Board decided that one of the sites should go to Team Dolphins. Since Wichita Aquashocks had hosted the meet in 2007 the Board felt it should decide the second Division II site between Emporia and Topeka. After discussion John Dicus decided to withdraw the Topeka bid if Lawrence moved their meet from its scheduled conflict with the TSA Beach Bash meet. Lawrence agreed to move its IMX meet to June 11-13. Gary Ledford made the motion to have the Board recommend to the House of Delegates that the long course 2008 Division II meets be awarded to Team Dolphins and Emporia Aquatics. Scott Bliss seconded the motion and all voted in favor of the motion.

Pete Malone asked if Topeka would be willing to have its Voorhees-Maxfield meet a week earlier. John Dicus agreed to host the meet on April 25-28 which allows a two week gap before the Blazer Early Bird Meet.

Pete Malone also reported that USA Swimming wishes to host the Grand Prix meet at Columbia, Missouri, in the future. This means that the meet hosted in January by Columbia will probably need another host when Columbia also hosts the Sectional meet and suggested that Tsunami might be the team to host a January meet.

Mike Soderling reported that the MAL west closed-league championship would be added to the schedule for February 8-10 and Pete Malone reported that the Clay Platte Y Blue Wave would be adding a long course meet to the 2008 schedule in June once they had secured a date from their Y.

Joe Ogilvie made the motion to recommend the meet schedule as amended to the House of Delegates at the Missouri Valley April 14 meeting. Mike Soderling seconded the motion and all voted in favor of it.

John Dicus stated that Missouri Valley as a LSC in USA Swimming receives insurance against criminal activity through the Hartford Insurance Company. To continue to receive this coverage Missouri Valley must certify that its audit committee performs semi- annual audits, that a person other than the one who writes the checks for the LSC balances the LSC’s checkbook and that checks over $5000 have dual signatures. John stated that Jolisa Buchner, Dulcy Sellon and himself would devise a policy to meet these requirements and present it to the House of Delegates at the April meeting.

Pete Malone stated that Central High School’s pool is now managed by the Kansas City Parks and Recreation department. To support and encourage the Kansas City Storm swim team the Parks and Recreation Department do not charge the Storm for meet entries. Joe made the motion that any team hosting a meet at Central High school in which the Storm is entered would be able to waive the 15% of the Storm’s entry fee paid to Missouri Valley for the meet. Sandy seconded the motion and all voted in favor of it. This motion would apply to the Division II short Course 2007 meet.

Linda Bailey announced that Vito Commisano had been elected as the junior athlete representatives by the swimmers at the Division I meet.

The meeting adjourned at 2:30 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Dulcy Sellon, Secretary
