Minutes of Board of Directors Meeting

Held on August 01, 2008 at Lenexa KS

Members in attendance: Scott Bliss, Jolisa Buchner, David Bucholtz, John Dicus, Gary Ledford, Mike Lewellyn, Sandy Miller, Bill Rose, George Schluter, Dulcy Sellon.

John Dicus called the meeting to order at 12:45 and asked for a motion to approve the April minutes. George Schluter made the motion, which Scott Bliss seconded and the motion was accepted unanimously.

Gary Ledford reported that he was working on the USAS Convention plans. Jolisa Buchner stated that she would not be attending but would provide the budget information for MVS’s budget meeting at the convention.

Bill Rose asked Sandy if the MVS timing system was functioning correctly since TSA had had some difficulty with it at their summer meet. She stated that the score board and pads were working properly. George Schluter mentioned that coaches had expressed the desire for a score board with more than one line. Sandy said that a larger scoreboard was likely to require a larger trailer than MVS currently owned but that she would check into this.

George Schluter raised the concern expressed at the Division II meet that the meet had been changed from being swum in an eight-lane format to a six-lane format and events rained out on Friday were added to the events swum on Saturday. Both changes were made after consultation with the coaches by the referee. David Bucholtz said that the host team awarded eight places though the heats were changed from eight lanes to six and that all the teams at the meet agreed that the six lanes allowed swimmers a warm down lane and also allowed the events to be better paced. It was agreed that meet bids for these championships should reflect the six-lane configuration. It was also suggested that the USA Swimming rule limiting swimmers to 5 events per day could not be breeched.

The problem raised by the inadvertent change in the bonus swim wording for Division I was also discussed. Scott Bliss stated that he and Mike Lewellyn would correct the problem by making the needed changes to the championship meet templates on the MVS website.

George Schluter stated that the Division I hosts were not planning to require proof-of-time at the meet. Everyone agreed that the meet hosts should require swimmers to prove their qualifying time for the meet if they did not achieve it at the meet and to pay the fine if they had no proof.

The MVS fall meeting will be in Lawrence on October 4. The location still has to be secured.

Jolisa asked if the numbers attending the Division I meet this year were down from past years. Mike Lewellyn stated that he thought the numbers were low this year because the Zone Meet was a mega zone meet and only 2 days away from the end of the Division I meet. Bill Rose stated that the coaches were considering changes to the summer championship meet format and would bring this up for discussion at the MVS fall meeting. Mike Lewellyn said that Zones might change into two meets, a senior and an age group meet at the Convention this fall. The meets at which the new suits can be used is also likely to be discussed. MVS will probably also have this as a discussion issue at the fall meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 1:45.

Respectfully submitted,

Dulcy Sellon, Secretary
