Sarah Bednar, Blues Aquatics Coach

Asheville School Aquatic Director & Head Asheville School Varsity Coach

Sarah started her competitive swimming career at the age of seven where she had considerable success through high school setting school and sectional records.  She switched gears while in college and rowed for Purdue University. Her varsity women’s boat consistently placed in the top 2 in the Big 10 Championships.  Sarah’s coaching career began over a decade ago in CT where she coached age-group swimming.  She has successfully coached in prep school swimming over the last 8 years.   Her teams have won three New England Championships and three NC Independent School Championships and several conference championships.  

Sarah is a certified level 2 swim coach through USA Swimming, a level 2 rowing coach through USA Rowing, and a certified lifeguard-training instructor.

Courtney Dunham, Blues Aquatics Asheville Assistant Coach

Coach Courtney is the primary coach of the Blues I and Blues II groups. Coach Courtney is a graduate from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts where she was a member of the varsity swim team for four years. She achieved NEWMAC All-Conference Academic Honors twice in her career. Before college, Coach Courtney attended Canterbury School in Connecticut with Coach Sarah Bednar as head coach. At Canterbury, Courtney helped win the 2014 NEPSSA Championship team and still holds two relay records at the school. She also received the Charles Huntington Award for Academic/Athletic excellence. Additionally, she has coached for United States Sports Camps alongside Coach Sarah. A native of New York, Coach Courtney is looking forward to relocating to Asheville and working with everyone at Blues Aquatics and working for Transylvania County Habitat for Humanity.Specific questions about athletes in these groups should be directed to Coach Courtney.

Scott Simmons, Blues Aquatics Asheville Coach

Coach Scott is the coach for all Blues Aquatics Athletes.  He has over twenty years experience coaching and teaching swimming.  His philosophy for coaching takes on a holistic approach: Coach Scott believes the swimmer needs to be present during their experience in the pool, on the deck, in the weight room, and in the classroom.  He feels confidence is the key to unlock all the potential a swimmer can have.  The team and culture play the most important role and it is his job to enusre the environment is ideal for competition and practice; everyone working together in order to support excellence both in the water and out.  Coach Scott's first emphasis is technique, he always returns to it each cycle of the season.  With great technique efficiency is reached, which allows swimmers to progress, maximizing efficient movements with their powerphases of stroke, kick, and underwater work.  He is level 4 ASCA certified.  The goal for Coach Scott is to learn and grow along with his team as they build their confidence and understanding for a demanding sport.  He listens to his swimmers, families, coaches, and volunteers in hopes of building a team to compete with the East, more importantly, to create an environment where the East will want to come West and compete.  Coach Scott loves hosting meets, loves being at practice, and enjoys his job.  You can count on Coach Scott attending all practices, all competitions, and be able to call or interact with him on the deck, at a competition, or out and about the community. 

Coahc Scott is the Primary coach for Blues Elite, Blues I, II, III, and Blues Bridge Group.  You can contact him about registering, or with questions or concerns, he can reached anytime.  If your questions and concerns are not an emergency, then the best times to reach him are: Monday-Sunday, 9:00AM-1:30PM.  After 1:30PM he is getting ready for practice or at a compettiion.
