The Greg Doughty

Building Champions Fund

Greg Doughty, grandson of Sandhills Sandsharks  founder Marsey Peterson and son of Board President Lindley Fleury, grew up swimming for Sandsharks starting at the age of 4.  Through hard work and determination, he set multiple state high school records, achieving All-American status. Greg continued his swimming career as Co-Captain of the Southern Methodist University team (Dallas, TX), again attaining All-American recognition.  Greg’s warmth, inclusiveness, and drive epitomized the mission of the Sandhills Sandsharks.

To Greg, anyone could be considered a “champion” if they gave a task their best effort. It was never about the winning, but making the effort to try to do one’s best.

The Greg Doughty Building Champions Fund honors Greg’s memory and supports Sandsharks’ mission to expand aquatics programming to the Sandhills community.  Through Learn to Swim lessons, competitive swimming, and lifeguard training the Sandhills Sandsharks save lives while building champions.

The addition of the Shark Dome to our new home at the Town of Southern Pines Pool Park, plus partnering with other local nonprofits and USA Swimming’s Make A Splash program, enable us bring Learn to Swim to at risk populations, thereby starting a new chapter in our 35+ year history in the Sandhills.

Furthermore, Sandsharks has expanded the year round competitive program to include USA Swimming’s Flex Swim program for seasonal swimmers, while increasing hours for Masters swimmers.

Your donation enables us to continue our newest chapter of growth in community programming.  Sandhills Sandsharks Swimming is a 501( c ) 3 nonprofit; all donations are tax deductible.
