Tony Sakakeeny Assistant Coach

Tony has had a knack for swimming his whole life. He started out his swimming career here at the YMCA. He continued to be in the top of his field in NE swimming until his family relocated to Kansas in 1997 where he swam at the Wichita Swim Club. After spending a year at Wichita State University, he decided to move back home and swim Division 3 at Salem State for 3 years.

“Swimming in the Midwest was a great experience.  I swam a 200 breast in the same heat as Seth van Neerden who was the US recordholder at the time.  At 16 I was no slouch but he almost lapped me. Seeing that level of swimming first hand was unique experience, and turned me on to stroke mechanics and why something as simple as proper streamlining is so important.”

Throughout his career as a swimmer, Tony spent a lot of teaching others how to swim as well.

Tony worked as a volunteer swim instructor while swimming for ANA, and during his 4 years in Wichita, Tony taught swim lessons at the swim club, had his own private lesson practice and was the head coach of a developing country club team for 3 years.  Throughout college and after, he was the assistant coach at Central Catholic High School, the head Coach of the Peabody High School swim team, and head coach of the Salem Y swim team (YNS).  Tony also helped Coach Dan on his first year at ANA. Tony rejoined the ANA YMCA coaching team as a volunteer again in 2017 when his son Sam joined the Hurricanes.
