Dave Modzelewski Head Coach of Competitive Aquatics

Dave Join the team as the Associate Head coach in August of 2021.  He is the lead site Coach for LVO

Coach Dave comes  from the Cheshire Y Sea Dogs as the Head Age Group Coach for the past 3 years.
 

Dave has coached numerous Zone Qualifiers, Age Group State Champions, a Futures Qualifier, and a Y  National Qualifier. Dave also coached the Cheshire HS Girls Team to 3 State Championships and 1 State Open Championship where he coached 10 State Champions, 3 State Relay Champions, and 4 All-American Swimmers.

He comes with extensive experience in the developmental area of swimming, he was the former Head Developmental Coach of the Wilton Y Wahoos for 5 years. Dave worked with all groups on the Wahoo Team including their Top Age Group Swimmers as well as their National Team Swimmers. He grew the Wahoo 10/Under Team to produce multiple Zone Qualifiers and Age Group State Qualifiers. Dave started his career with the Ridgefield Aquatic Club and Brookfield YMCA where he coached the developmental groups and assisted with the age groupers on a daily basis. 

Dave has been involved in CT Swimming as the Head Coach & 10/Under Coach of the CT Zone Team for the past 7 years. He has been a member of the CT Swimming Board of Directors since 2013 as the Junior/Senior Coaches Representative, and mostly recently the Age Group Committee Chair for the past 2 years. Dave also helped The Cheshire Y Sea Dogs become a Safe Sport club in 2020.  Dave grew up in Newtown, CT where he swam for the local Summer Rec League Team as well as for Newtown HS. He helped teach Swim Lessons and coach the same Summer League Team he swam on. Dave participated in many sports growing up and believes in the importance of playing and competing in multiple sports to enhance various areas of swimming. He enjoys watching swimmers grow their abilities and love of the sport of swimming!

Jack Van Meter Associate Head Coach / LvO Site Coach

Coach Jack Van Meter joined YNS in the Fall 2022 season as the Associate Head Coach/Lead Site Coach at LVO. 

Jack joins us from the Greater Des Moines YMCA where he began his coaching career in 2020. During his time with the Des Moines Marlins, Jack worked as the Head Coach for their West Des Moines Age Group Site as well as an Assistant Coach for their Travel Team. He enjoys being involved with all levels of the sport and has worked with athletes ranging from the age group level to junior national qualifiers. 

Jack began swimming at the age of 7 and swam competitively in the Des Moines area through high school. Upon graduating, Jack moved to western Pennsylvania where he studied and swam at Allegheny College. During his time with the Gators, he was a conference finalist in the 400 IM, 500 free, and 200 back.

Coach Jack is excited to be joining YNS in this role and is looking forward to helping swimmers reach their personal and competitive goals!

Jackie is the Team’s  Safe Sport Representative

Joined YNS coaching staff June 2021.  Jackie comes to us with several years of age group coaching and instructing for area YMCA's and Boys and Girls Clubs as well as other teams. 

As a coach at Lifetime Athletic, Jackie was the first coach at the Burlington site to have swimmers move on and swim at a collegiate level. During her time at the boys and girls club of Lawrence she was recognized as the most valuable coach of the year by the organization and helped swimmers there become ready for their careers as high school swimmers.  

She also has many years of experience as a successful competitive YMCA and USA swimmer. Jackie started swimming for the Merrimack Valley YMCA when she was 6 years old and swam for them until she graduated high school and moved on to swim 2 years at the University of Tampa. She also swam for her high school team at Central Catholic and posted some school records for them as well as the 2014 champion in the 50 free at her sectional and states championship meets her senior year as a captain. 

Jackie came back to her high school team after her 2 years at Tampa and was the assistant coach for a season. During that season, the team posted new school records and first place finishes at championship meets in individual events as well as relays. 

She is very excited about joining YNS and to see everyone succeed and have fun!

 
Leanne Smith Assistant Senior Coach

Leanne is our new Assistant Senior Coach.   Leanne will continue to work with the same age groups she has been coaching on deck in Beverly but will have expanded responsibilities both on deck and administratively.

As you may know Leanne has been a long time member of the Greater Beverly Y staff. Starting out as a highly competitive gymnast for our Wildcats, Leanne then became part of the gymnastics coaching staff and team manager. In 2014 Leanne discovered her appreciation for the water and the competitive swim world. Since then, here’s a sampling of Leanne’s accomplishments:

  • U.S. National Swim team since 2014

  • Lived and trained at the Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for the past 6 years

  • Tokyo 2020 Paralympian 

  • Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Silver Medalist in the 100M Freestyle

  • 3x Pan Pacific Champion 3x Silver Medalist 1x Bronze medalist

As impressive as her resume is, if you have had the opportunity to meet Leanne, you quickly realize she’s an even better person.  We are thrilled to have Leanne work closely with the swimmers on our team and support their passion for competitive swim.

Cindy has been around, on or beside water her whole life.

She personally swam on Age group, college and Masters teams. She is avid open water swimmer. Her experience with coaching began as a teenager and has involved coaching or teaching swimming since then. Cindy has coached Country Club, High School, Jr. College, USA Swimming age group and Masters.

She coached High School swimmers to CCS and States while in California from 1990-2018. In addition to High School, Cindy was the head coach of a USA team and had swimmers participate in Junior Olympics, Far Westerns, Sectionals and Futures. She has had team members swim at Division I, II and III colleges and one athlete achieve Olympic Trials standards.

Cindy is excited about being involved with the YNS Sharks with the belief that the sport and art of swimming is a great contributor to developing well - rounded individuals as they prepare for their future.

 

Deanna Atwood Beverly Assistant Coach

Dede Atwood joined the YNS coaching staff in 2016 and assists with the Age Group Elite, High School, Pre-National, and National groups. Dede is a Southern California native and moved to New England in 2005. She swam for Industry Hills Aquatics Club for thirteen years specializing in Backstroke, Butterfly, and IM. She was ranked Top 16 in the nation at 10 in Backstroke. She had no intentions of swimming in college but ended up swimming and playing water polo for Whittier College. Dede held multiple school records, placed 3rd in the 100 Backstroke in her conference, was awarded Female Individual Athlete of the Year, and made Second Team all SCIAC in water polo. She is an active member of the YNS Masters swim team and her daughter, Karli, is a swimmer in the Mako Shark group. Dede works in Boston as a Financial Investigator and lives in Beverly with her husband Kevin and daughter Karli. She is excited to coach with YNS and share her love and passion for swimming, this position “feeds” her soul.

Laura Crossman Beverly Assistant Coach

Laura joined YNS at the start of 2018, after taking  a year away from the pool. During her time with YNS she has worked with all age groups. Laura’s favorite part of the coaching is integrating the principles of training with the mental side of competition. 

She previously served as the Assistant Director of Competitive Swimming for the South Shore YMCA Strypers. Laura worked with swimmers of all ages during her time there but spent the majority of her time on deck coaching the Senior/National level swimmers. During her time the group produced several NE Record Holders, Junior National Qualifiers and numerous Sectional and YMCA National Qualifiers. In 2016 short course season the team won the YMCA New England Championship Meet. Throughout her time with the team Laura was able to learn a great deal about stroke development and technique as well as various training methodologies. The team also implemented a new dryland program that emphasized functional training, coordination and mastering the basics. She was fortunate to be exposed to many aspects of the sport and coaching, as well as the many pieces that go into the administrative side of running a YMCA team. 

Laura grew up swimming on the South Shore. She finished her age group career with Kingfish Swimming & her high school team in Pembroke, MA before going on to swim 4 years at Gordon College while earning a degree in psychology. In 2017 she return to the North Shore to pursue her Masters of Education in Moderate Disabilities at Gordon. She currently works as an Inclusion Teacher for the Lynn Public Schools and is working on an Educational Specialist degree in Reading.

 
Rebecca Burrell Ipswich Assistant Coach

Coach Rebecca has been involved in the sport of swimming for over three decades, and has been with the Sharks as an assistant coach since 2016 at both the Ipswich and Beverly sites. She's also the head swim coach at Triton High, and was the assistant coach at WPI from 1996-2000, where she swam collegiately from 1992-1996. While in Grad School, she swam with Cambridge Masters Swim Club (now Charles River Aquatics). She lives in Rowley with her husband, two sons, seven cats, and a dog who is convinced they are taunting him.

Kelly Binder Ipswich Assistant Coach

Kelly grew up in Pittsburgh, PA where she started competitively swimming at age 11. She went on to get her Sports Administration degree at Lock Haven University where she swam all 4 years. After her undergrad at LHU, she got her Masters in Sports Management at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She moved to MA in April of 2013 and started coaching with YNS in October of 2013. She currently is a coach at the Ipswich site.

Susan Guertin LVO Assistant Coach

Susan is in her 37th year as a lead site coach of the Marblehead Group. She is also in her 30th year as the Head Coach of the Marblehead High School swim team. Susan has an impressive record with both the high school and YMCA  teams. Her high school team was runner-up at the 1998 girls N. Sectional championships, placed third at the State Championships that year. Placed third in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Marblehead has won 18 plus Northeast Conference Meet titles. In 2011, her girls won the Division II State Championship with only 7 girls.  This was the highlight of her high school swimming career. 

 

Susan is in her 47th  year teaching at the YMCA; 23 of those years she was also the Aquatic Director.  She has won two Eastern Mass YMCA District Division II titles and an overall girl’s team championship in 1992.  In 1990, the Marblehead 9 & 10 Girls won the YMCA New England Championship. In 1995, Susan had a group of nine swimmers qualify for the LC National Championships (her first qualifiers). She has had two swimmers qualify for the SC Nationals and 21 for the LC Nationals as well as four All-American. Susan graduated from Salem State College in 1992 Suma Cum Laude with a degree in Aquatic Management and Biology. She is a Level 3 ASCA recognized coach. Susan holds a top 10 time as a swimmer in the 100 Back and 1650 Free for NE Master's Swimming. She also set the record, for her age group, in the 200m Backstroke at the Bay State Summer Games in 2006 and came in second in 2007. 

 
Susan is married to Paul Guertin for 49 years who was instrumental in helping raise money and build the new Lynch/vanOtterloo YMCA as a board member for over 20 years.  She has three daughters Tara who was a diver (Photo Editor for AFAR,  San Francisco), twins: Erin, diver and swimmer and National qualifier (Caterer in Jackson Hole), Colleen diver and swimmer and National qualifier (teacher in Marblehead).  One grandson, Elliott.
Jen Brehob LVO Assistant Coach
As a Bronze and Age Group coach, Jen gained experience first teaching group lessons since 1999 and the Bronze Group since 2004 where she learned first hand from Coach Susan Guertin. She is an Assistant Coach at Marblehead High School, USMS Certified Coach Level 3, and ASCA Level 2 coach. Jen's strengths as a Masters Coach at YNS derive from improving fitness and technique in a group setting so that swimmers can compete at high levels or simply enjoy a built-in workout group meeting at regular intervals.

Jen taught herself to swim at age 5 on a beach in Cape Ann, graduated from Marblehead High School, where she is an assistant Swim Team Coach. Jennifer earned her BA from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and her Masters in Classical Archaeology from the University of Texas at Austin. She led an excavation of the first of 12 tombs discovered in an old olive grove/new lettuce patch which turned out to be the ancient Necropolis of Metapontion (Greek) Metapontum (Latin) in Southern Italy. She was also fortunate to be one of 5 crew on a Swan 56 sailboat crossing from Antigua, in the West Indies, to Pula, in Croatia.

Jen has three children, a daughter who graduated with Masters degrees in Architecture from Harvard in 2021, and twins, a daughter who graduated with a BS in Geology from UMass, Amherst, 2020, and a son working in Marblehead.

Jen graduated with honors as a Certified Paralegal at North Shore Community College in January, 2018 and is interested in policies directed towards healthy swimming on Nahant, Lynn, Swampscott and Marblehead beaches.
Emily Katz LVO Assistant Coach

Emily began coaching at YNS in 2015.  Previously, she coached at the LS JCC in Newton for two years.  Emily swam for the Cape Cod Swim Club from the age of 5 through high school, and then swam for William Smith College, where she earned a B.S. in Environmental Science.  Emily also holds two masters degrees in education, and teaches Pre Kindergarten for Boston Public Schools.
