Janet Harty Head Coach

Janet Harty was named the Head Coach of YNS in the Fall of 2015 and brought with her many years of coaching experience. She has coached swimmers of all ages from lessons through the age groups to very high level competitive swimmers. Janet led swimmers to a wide range of national and international competitions including the 4th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and the 18 & Under World Cup held in Tokyo, Japan and Beijing, China. She has coached swimmers named to USA Swimming National Junior teams in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and served as an assistant coach at the 2014 USA Swimming National Junior team training camp held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. 

Janet, her husband Phil and their children live in Salisbury. Janet's oldest son, Brandon, graduated from the Mount Wachusett Community College. Her son, Ryan, is a senior student / junior athlete swimmer at the University of Texas in Austin and her daughter, Kaitlin, is a junior student / athlete swimmer also at the University of Texas in Austin. 

Alessandro Eramo Head Age Group Coach

Alessandro joined the YNS coaching staff in 2011 as an assistant age group coach, working with the 12 & under swimmers at the Beverly location. In 2013, Alessandro was named the Lead Site Coach of the Haverhill branch of YNS. During that time, he worked with all age groups, helping multiple swimmers qualify for Y New Englands and Age Groups.  

Alessandro joined full time YNS staff in the fall of 2015 as the Lead Age Group Coach, overseeing the development and progress of over 200 athletes under the age of 12. In January 2017, he was named the Head Age Group Coach of YNS. Alessandro primarily coaches Age Group Elite, High School, Tiger, and Hammerhead groups at the Beverly location in addition to assisting with the Pre-National and National groups. Alessandro is an ASCA level 2 coach.

Prior to becoming a coach, Alessandro swam for YNS from 2003-2013. Alessandro graduated from Hamilton Wenham Regional High School in 2012 and went on to study at Merrimack College, where he graduated with a B.A. in Human Development in 2015.

Jan Boland Beverly Assistant National Coach

Coaches Pre-National and National groups.

Jan has coached with YNS for over 15 years, primarily with the Pre-National and National group. Jan is an ASCA Level 2 Coach and has completed the Physiology School Certification for ASCA Level 3. Jan has participated in many Coaching Clinics over the years. Jan also works with the YNS Special Olympic swim team group.

Jan is a life-long YMCA swimmer and swam in college for the Wittenberg University Women’s Swim Team. Jan and her husband, Jim, are active members of the YNS Masters Swim Team. Jan has successfully completed two Ironman Triathlon races: Ironman Mt. Tremblant (Canada) in 2016 and Ironman Lake Placid (NY) in 2017. An Ironman event consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and then a 26.2 marathon run. Jan has also completed Half Ironman events. Jan placed in the top 3 women in her division for the swim portion of all of these events. In the past, Jan also competed in Olympic distance triathlons in the USA and New Zealand, placing first woman overall in a number of races. Jan was ranked 25th in the USA in her age group and named an honorary member of the New Zealand World Championship Triathlon Team in 1991.

Jan has a B.A. in Psychology from Wittenberg University. She also holds a Masters Degree in Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University. Jan worked in Human Resources for over 10 years for Fortune 500 Companies and as a consultant. Jan has two daughters who competed for the Sharks. Her younger daughter also competed for the YMCA Wildcats gymnastics team.

Dede Atwood Beverly Assistant Coach

Coaches Age Group Elite, High School, Pre-Nat, and National groups.

Dede Atwood joined the YNS coaching staff in 2016 and assists with the Age Group Elite, High School, Pre-National, and National groups. Dede is a Southern California native and moved to New England in 2005. She swam for Industry Hills Aquatics Club for thirteen years specializing in Backstroke, Butterfly, and IM. She was ranked Top 16 in the nation at 10 in Backstroke. She had no intentions of swimming in college but ended up swimming and playing water polo for Whittier College. Dede held multiple school records, placed 3rd in the 100 Backstroke in her conference, was awarded Female Individual Athlete of the Year, and made Second Team all SCIAC in water polo. She is an active member of the YNS Masters swim team and her daughter, Karli, is a swimmer in the Mako Shark group. Dede works in Boston as a Financial Investigator and lives in Beverly with her husband Kevin and daughter Karli. She is excited to coach with YNS and share her love and passion for swimming, this position “feeds” her soul.

Claudia joined the YNS coaching staff in the fall of 2017 and assists with Masters, Little Sharks and Shark Bronze. Claudia is a southern New Hampshire native residing in Seabrook, NH and is currently pursuing a degree in Psychology with a Biology minor at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. She swam competitively for 13 years swimming for both SOLO aquatics as well as Central Catholic High school during her career. While in high school she was one of her teams lead 500 free swimmers. Due to multiple knee injuries and Endicott’s lack of a swim team, she is no longer actively competing. She is ecstatic to be continuing her passion in other ways and share her love for this sport.

Susan Guertin LVO Co-Lead Coach

Susan is in her 37th year as a lead site coach of the Marblehead Group. She is also in her 30th year as the Head Coach of the Marblehead High School swim team. Susan has an impressive record with both the high school and YMCA  teams. Her high school team was runner-up at the 1998 girls N. Sectional championships, placed third at the State Championships that year. Placed third in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Marblehead has won 18 plus Northeast Conference Meet titles. In 2011, her girls won the Division II State Championship with only 7 girls.  This was the highlight of her high school swimming career. 


Susan is in her 47th  year teaching at the YMCA; 23 of those years she was also the Aquatic Director.  She has won two Eastern Mass YMCA District Division II titles and an overall girl’s team championship in 1992.  In 1990, the Marblehead 9 & 10 Girls won the YMCA New England Championship. In 1995, Susan had a group of nine swimmers qualify for the LC National Championships (her first qualifiers). She has had two swimmers qualify for the SC Nationals and 21 for the LC Nationals as well as four All-American. Susan graduated from Salem State College in 1992 Suma Cum Laude with a degree in Aquatic Management and Biology. She is a Level 3 ASCA recognized coach. Susan holds a top 10 time as a swimmer in the 100 Back and 1650 Free for NE Master's Swimming. She also set the record, for her age group, in the 200m Backstroke at the Bay State Summer Games in 2006 and came in second in 2007. 

Susan is married to Paul Guertin for 49 years who was instrumental in helping raise money and build the new Lynch/vanOtterloo YMCA as a board member for over 20 years.  She has three daughters Tara who was a diver (Photo Editor for AFAR,  San Francisco), twins: Erin, diver and swimmer and National qualifier (Caterer in Jackson Hole), Colleen diver and swimmer and National qualifier (teacher in Marblehead).  One grandson, Elliott.
Jenny Luker LVO Co-Lead Coach

Jenny joined the YNS staff in 2008 as director of dryland training for the Junior and Senior groups and is currently the LvO Co-Site Coordinator for the High School, Age Group Elite, Pre-National and National groups. She has been involved in swimming for more than 30 years. As a college athlete, she was conference champion and record holder for the Kenyon College swim team, who currently has 23 NCAA Division III National Championships.  Kenyon can proudly boast that no other women's program, in any sport or any division in NCAA history has every held as many titles.  


As a master swimmer, she is a national champion, USMS All American and world record relay titleholder. Bob Seltzer, Jenny's husband, has been a Meet Referee for over 15 years.  Her step-daughter Danielle Seltzer was a 2009 NCAA All American swimmer and her son Charlie, a YNS alum, is a junior at Amherst College. He became an NCAA Academic All-American at Amherst as a Sophmore on the Amherst Swim and Dive team.

Jenny is an ASCA Level 2 certified coach.

Andy Jones LVO Assistant Coach

Andy joined the YNS coaching staff at LVO, part time, in the fall of 2015 with a focus on Age Group Elite and older athletes.  He is excited at the opportunity to contribute to a sport he has enjoyed for decades.

As a youth, Andy swam both for Warrington and the King’s School, Chester in the UK at regional and national levels before going up to Cambridge University.  At Cambridge he captained and coached the University Swimming and Waterpolo Club in his Sophomore year (the “second year” as it is called in the UK) when the team finished 3 rd overall in the British University Swimming Championships and won the annual Varsity Match against Oxford by a record margin.

Andy joined YNS Masters in 2006 when he moved to the area and was subsequently introduced to the joys of Open Water Swimming by fellow YNS Masters swimmers. Andy’s swims include the Boston Light Swim, the 10 mile Kingdom Swim and a successful English Channel Solo Swim in August 2017.

Andy is a level 2 swimming coach, graduate of Cambridge University and Harvard Business School.  He lives in Swampscott with his wife Jacqui, and their sons Toby and Harry.

Jen Brehob LVO Assistant Coach

As a Bronze and Age Group coach, Jen gained experience first teaching group lessons since 1999 and the Bronze Group since 2004 where she learned first hand from Coach Susan Guertin. She is an Assistant Coach at Marblehead High School, USMS Certified Coach Level 3, and ASCA Level 2 coach. Jen's strengths as a Masters Coach at YNS derive from improving fitness and technique in a group setting so that swimmers can compete at high levels or simply enjoy a built-in workout group meeting at regular intervals.

Jen taught herself to swim at age 5 on a beach in Cape Ann, graduated from Marblehead High School, where she is an assistant Swim Team Coach, received her BA from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and her Masters from the University of Texas at Austin. She led an excavation of the first of 12 tombs discovered in an old olive grove/new lettuce patch which turned out to be the ancient Necropolis of Metapontion (Greek) Metapontum (Latin) in Southern Italy. She was also fortunate to be one of 5 crew on a TransAtlantic sailboat crossing from Antigua, in the West Indies, to Pula, in Croatia.

Jen has three children, a daughter in 2nd year of MLA1 at Harvard, a daughter in her junior year at UMass, Amherst, and a son who is a Personal Care Assistant in Marblehead with a part time job at the Marblehead House of Pizza.

Jen graduated with honors as a Certified Paralegal at North Shore Community College in January, 2018 and is looking to set up Open Water swimming at Nahant Beach for this summer.

Emily began coaching at YNS in 2015.  Previously, she coached at the LS JCC in Newton for two years.  Emily swam for the Cape Cod Swim Club from the age of 5 through high school, and then swam for William Smith College, where she earned a B.S. in Environmental Science.  Emily also holds two masters degrees in education, and teaches Pre Kindergarten for Boston Public Schools. 



Haverhill Site


Heather Rousseau Haverhill Lead Coach

Heather joined the coaching staff at YNS in 2014 and is the the current Lead Site Coach in Haverhill. She began swimming competitively at the age of 7 then left the sport to persue other interests. She returned to swimming in High School and continued through her undergraduate studies of Marine and General Biology at UMASS Dartmouth. Heather posses a MS in Marine Biology from UMASS Dartmouth and is an ASCA Level 2 Coach. Heather is a full time potter and resides in Haverhill, MA with her husband and 2 sons, Joshua and Jeremy. She enjoys open water swimming, distance running, and daily walks with her Chocolate Lab named Gracie. 

Zane Zeeh Haverhill Assistant Coach

Zane joined the coaching staff at YNS Haverhill location in 2017. He is a member of the YNS Masters team and enjoys open water swimming. He is also a 3 time Ironman finisher and Boston Marathon qualifier. Zane is a software developer at Neighborhood Health Plan and resides in Boxford, MA with his wife and 2 children, Mackenzie and JP who both swim for YNS.

Carol Yunker Haverhill Assistant Coach

Carol swam for YWCA league, AAU, and summer club specializing in sprints and butterfly. She swam for one year at Kent State College. She is originally from New Jersey and relocated to Massachusetts. In 2001, she joined the ANA Masters Team where she still swims and competes.

Her coaching career began in 1970 primarily as a diving instructor and then as a swim coach of a team that produced two national champions in 1979. Carol is an ASCA Level 1 and currently coaches swimming at Lowell and Haverhill High Schools, as well as the dive team at Lowell. She loves working with swimmers of all ages as it always teaches her something new.

She is married with three boys, two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Family has always been important to her and she enjoys spending as much time with them as possible. Carol’s interests include singing in a chorus and bowling once a week.

Caitlin has been a coach with YNS since 2015. She began as an assistant age group coach at the Beverly site as well as the Ipswich site.Currently she is serving as the lead site coordinator at the salem YMCA. Caitlin is originally from Haverhill MA, and was a member of the Haverhill High School swim and dive team all throughout highschool. Before coming to YNS, Caitlin worked as a swim instructor at the Haverhill YMCA since 2013, and a swim instructor at the Hedding summer camp in Epping NH. In Caitlin's time away from YNS, she serves as the head coach of Manchester Bath and Tennis Club, as well as a bridal stylist for David's Bridal, and an enrichment teacher at the Children's Piazza.  She is currently a student at Salem State University.
