Coaching Staff
Rob Wahl Head Coach and Program Director

Rob has been a coach with the BlueFins since 1998, working initially with the Junior / stroke development groups. Over time, he transitioned to the Senior Development group, developing athletes for advancement to the Senior program while assisting with that program level as well. In September 2009, Rob took over as Head Coach. In this role, he now works primarily with the Senior swimmers in addition to providing oversight and direction for the entire BlueFins program.

Rob’s philosophy for the BlueFins program is based on his background in engineering and quality. To maximize each swimmer’s potential, he believes it is vital to focus the development in the early years on stroke development and proper muscle memory. Once a solid foundation in the mechanics has been built, working on speed is the logical next step in the program and becomes the focus, along with technique refinement, as the swimmers mature in their development

Over the years, Rob has had the opportunity to coach many exceptional athletes who have qualified for USA Swimming Speedo, NCSA Jr National, USA Swimming Futures, USA Swimming Jr National, USA Swimming Senior National meets and US Olympic Trials. Additionally, many have become NYS High School Section V champions, NYS High School State champions, NCAA qualifiers, NCAA meet participants, High School and NCAA All-Americans, High School, Section V and College record holders, as well as significant contributors on various college programs. Rob received the Niagara LSC Senior Coach of the Year Award for the 2020-21 season in recognition for the performance of the BlueFins senior athletes.

In addition to USA Swimming coach membership, Rob is affiliated with the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), having attained level 3 performance and level 4 education certifications. He is currently working towards ASCA level 5 education certification.

Dennis Eggert Head Age Group Coach

Coach Dennis has been coaching with the BlueFins since 2008. He works mainly with the junior groups, focusing on stroke development.

Dennis commits himself to constantly improving his technical knowledge of swimming to help athletes reach these levels of competition. In addition to his USA Swimming credentials, Dennis is also an ASCA Level 2 certified coach.

Dennis’ competitive swimming experience began with the Green Dolphin Swim Club, which later joined with another club to become FAST. Dennis swam for Fairport High School varsity for three years, was part of three Sectional Championship Teams, and was honored to be a team captain for the 1983-84 season. Dennis then went on to swim at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Peter Doerner Assistant Coach, Juniors

Peter attempted to join the Webster BlueFins at age 6-3/4, but Coach John Lathrop requested that he return once he'd reached the ripe age of 7. After several years, he gradually improved and owned several team records (including the 500 free). Later Peter joined the Perkins Swim Club under Coach Bruce Smith, who started the Sea Dragons, and continued with them throughout high school. He was a co-captain of his high school team and went on to swim for 3 years at Tufts University where his specialty became the 200 butterfly.

As a coach, Peter worked as both an assistant and head coach for the Webster BlueFins in the 1990's, but eventually took a 20 year hiatus while pursuing triathlon endeavors (including AA honors and two completed Ironmans at Lake Placid). After 3 years of coaching Penfield's JV girls swim team, Peter returned to the BlueFins in 2018, happy to be coaching alongside some old friends.
