HCY Stingrays Practice Groups

At HCY there is a spot for every level of swimmer from the beginner to the National Level swimmer.  It is a difficult, yet fulfilling task to provide the right environment, support, and opportunities for every level of swimmer.  This is why HCY sets their groups up to serve as a development ladder.  We have 6 practice groups that provide the opportunity for swimmers to progress.

All groups are briefly described below.  In the next section, each group has its own more detailed Group Description.

Little Stingrays Prep

This group is for our novice and new swimmers ages 8 and under who can do a lap of backstroke and a lap of freestyle. This is a pre-competitive group that will participate in a limited number of swim meets throughout the season. The goal of this group is to work toward moving into a full competitive season. 

Little Stingrays

This group is for more advanced swimmers ages 8 and under who can do a lap of backstroke and a lap of freestyle, as well as either a lap of butterfly or breaststroke. 

Junior 1

This group is for swimmers ages 9-12 who need more fundamental development opportunities.

Junior 2

This group is for experienced swimmers ages 9-12 who need more advanced development opportunities.

Junior 3

This group is for swimmers ages 10-12 who have a strong competitive swimming background and have shown the desire to make a year-round commitment. 

Stingrays Prep

This group is for swimmers 11-13 and are new to competitive swimming. They will refine all four strokes, learn the nuances of swim team practice, and move toward the goal of a full competitive season. This is a pre-competitive group that will compete in a limited number of meets throughout the season. 

Senior 1

This group is for swimmers ages 13 & over who have a competitive swimming background, have shown the desire to make a year-round commitment, and who need more advanced development opportunities.

Senior 2

This group is for swimmers ages 13 & over who have a strong competitive swimming background, have shown the desire to make a year-round commitment, and are ready for more advanced training opportunities.

------------------Little Stingrays / Prep------------------ 

The Little Stingrays Group is the first level in the 7-group developmental ladder for HCY.  The objective is to introduce the sport and begin building swimming enjoyment and excellent swimming skills.  

 Requirements:

  1. Swimmers must be able to complete a lap of freestyle and backstroke without hesitating or breaking. 
  2. Swimmers must be 8 years old or younger as of Dec 1st.

 Equipment Required:

  1. Water Bottle
  2. Speedo Junior Kick Board
  3. Speedo Fins
  4. Speedo Mesh Bag

Group Goal Ladder: (Listed in order of priority)

  1. Love Swimming
  2. Know the cause of the YMCA – Strengthening communities through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
  3. Skill Acquisition:  25 legally of all 4 strokes, 100 IM
  4. Maintains 60% or higher practice attendance.

Swim Meet Attendance

  1. All regular season Dual Meets (4 total from Oct-January) *Please refer to Prep amended meet schedule mentioned above.*
  2. 8 & Under NJ YMCA Championships (February)

--------------- Junior 1 Group ---------------

The Junior 1 group is the third group in the 7-group development ladder of HCY.  Swimmers in this group are aged 9-12 who need more fundamental development opportunities.

Requirements:

  1. Swimmers must be able to complete 2 laps of freestyle and backstroke separately.
  2. The ability to swim one lap of breaststroke or butterfly is preferred but not mandatory.
  3. Swimmers ages 9-12.

Equipment:

  1. Water Bottle
  2. Speedo Junior Kick Board
  3. Speedo Fins
  4. Speedo Mesh Bag

Group Goal Ladder (Listed in order of priority)

  1. Technical Development: 50 legally of all 4 strokes, 200 IM
  2. Know the cause of the YMCA – Strengthening communities through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
  3. Maintains 60% or higher practice attendance.
  4. NJ YMCA Championship Qualifying Times
  5. NJ Swimming Junior Olympic Qualifying Times

Guidelines for Junior 2 Group Readiness

  1. Technical Efficiency:  Maintains proper technique through all 50’s
  2. Maturity
  3. Attendance
  4. 9-12 Years old
  5. Coaches discretion
  6. Practice Management
  7. Achievement of Junior 1 group goals

Swim Meet Attendance

  1. All regular season Dual Meets (4 total from Oct-January)
  2. HCY Autumn Challenge (November)
  3. HCY Stingray Splash (January)
  4. All YMCA Championship meets for which they qualify. (Feb - April)

--------------- Junior 2 Group ---------------

 The Junior 2 Group is the fourth group in HCY’s 7-group development ladder.  Swimmers in this group are ages 9-12 who need more advanced development opportunities.

Equipment:

  1. Speedo Mesh Bag
  2. Water Bottle
  3. Speedo Junior Kickboard
  4. Speedo Fins
  5. Speedo Bullethead Snorkel (Or Equivalent)

Group Goal Ladder (Listed in order of priority)

  1. Technical Efficiency: 100 Legally of all 4 strokes, 400 IM
  2. Know the cause of the YMCA – Strengthening communities through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
  3. Maintains 70% or higher practice attendance.
  4. NJ YMCA Championship Qualifying Times
  5. NJ Swimming Junior Olympic Qualifying Times

Guidelines for Junior 3 Group Readiness

  1. Technical Endurance: Maintains proper technique through 100s
  2. Maturity
  3. At least 10 years old
  4. Coaches Discretion
  5. Practice Management
  6. Achievement of Blue Group goals
  7. Maintains 80% practice attendance

Swim Meet Attendance

  1. All regular season Dual Meets (4 total from Oct-January)
  2. HCY Autumn Challenge (November)
  3. Long Island Holiday Invite (December)
  4. HCY Stingray Splash (January)
  5. All YMCA Championship meets for which they qualify. (Feb - April)

--------------- Junior 3 Group ---------------

 The Junior 3 Group is the 5th level of HCY’s 7-Group Development Ladder.  This group is for swimmers ages 10-12 who have a strong competitive swimming background and have shown the desire to make a year-round commitment. 

Equipment:

  1. Speedo Mesh Bag
  2. Water Bottle
  3. Speedo Junior or Adult Kick Board
  4. Speedo Fins
  5. Speedo Bullethead Snorkel (Or Equivalent)
  6. Speedo Preflex Paddles
  7. Dryland – Comfortable, weather appropriate attire – Sneakers are required

Group Goal Ladder (Listed in order of priority)

  1. Race Model Proficiency across all events
  2. Know the cause of the YMCA – Strengthening communities through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
  3. Maintains 80% or higher practice attendance.
  4. NJ YMCA Championship Qualifying Times
  5. NJ Swimming Junior Olympic Qualifying Times
  6. YMCA National Qualifying Times

Guidelines for Senior 1 Group Readiness

  1. Technical Endurance: proficiency holds up under stress in all four strokes
  2. Maturity
  3. Must Maintain 80% attendance
  4. At least 13 years old
  5. Coaches Discretion
  6. Practice Management
  7. Achievement of Junior 3 Group goals

The Senior 1 Group is the 6th level of HCY’s 7-Group Development Ladder.  This group is for swimmers ages 13 & over who have a competitive swimming background, have shown the desire to make a year-round commitment, and who need more advanced development opportunities.

Group Standards

  1. Swimmers in this group are expected to be team leaders and role models.
  2. Swimmers must maintain 60% attendance and commit to year-round swimming.
  3. Show the ability and attitude to work in an environment of advanced training techniques.
  4. In order to maintain practice continuity, avoid over-training, and reach optimal performance, it is recommended that athletes keep the coaches abreast of all high-school swimming commitments so that a plan of action that best suits the individual needs of each athlete can be put into place.
  5. Know the cause of the YMCA – Strengthening communities through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.

  3. Speedo Adult Kick Board
  4. Speedo Fins
  5. Speedo Bullethead Snorkel (Or Equivalent)

Group Goal Ladder

  1. NJ YMCA Championship Qualifying Times
  2. YMCA National Qualifying Times
  3. Identify and secure opportunities to attend college
  4. USA Swimming Academic All-American Status:  HS Sophomore + Qualifying time + 3.5 GPA
