We all need to be thoughtful about what we eat, to optimize our fuel to be our best on meet day, but if you are a vegetarian or vegan, please be especially vigilant about understanding what your body needs and how you will supply it. Lots of vegetable based protein sources are available, but learn how much of your favorite sources you need, to get enough of what your body needs as an athlete, both during training and competition! Hydrate!
Sweat losses can be great during practice or competition. Failure to replace these losses, or to maintain hydration will affect performance, and may negatively impact a swimmer’s health. Thirst is not a good indicator of fluid needs, therefore swimmers must drink on a schedule.
Swimmers should have their water bottle with them daily; and for older swimmers a solution of Gatorade and water in that bottle poolside during practice.
