2019-2020 Parent and Athlete Code of Conduct

Effective 9-1-19

DROP OFF AND PICKING UP ATHLETES: All athletes should arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of practice to be ready to enter the water at the start of the posted practice time. When dropping off athletes, please wait until the athletes have entered the building before leaving. In the event of a last minute pool closing or cancelled practice, information will be communicated to families via email and social media. Parents should be at the school/pool waiting for their athlete no more than 10 minutes after the end of practice. One coach will always remain until the last athlete is picked up. Coaches are not allowed to transport athletes.

SPORTMANSHIP: How our swim parents conduct themselves in the stands is a reflection on our team. One never knows who is sitting nearby in the stands and could overhear disparaging remarks made about an athlete, a coach, or the club. We ask that all parents keep a positive outlook and bring concerns and issues to the Board for resolution, rather than discussing them in the stands.

MEETS: Sign your athlete up for swim meets through the club website, paying close attention to deadlines. Late entries must be approved by the Head Coach and/or Meet Director. Registration for meets and other events needs to happen by the stated registration due date. Club-internal registration due dates allow for as much time as possible for parents to sign up before the club must submit entries to host clubs. Event listings will be posted as soon as they are available and decided upon so parents can plan ahead. This practice will help the club (1) avoid damaging relationships with host clubs, (2) ensure our athletes are appropriately entered and do not miss events due to meets filling up or due dates being missed, (3) provide proper planning and volunteer staffing for any of our events, and (4) avoid duplicative efforts and thus save volunteer work hours for other valuable club tasks.

If your athlete qualifies for finals in a preliminary/final type of meet, they are expected to swim in finals. If the athlete is an alternate they are expected to attend the finals session.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of warm-ups for all meets unless otherwise instructed by coaches. The athletes need this time to get changed, receive final lane assignments, and get ready for warm-up.

HOW TO COMMUNICATE ANY PARENT ISSUES OR CONCERNS: Our club cannot improve without parent feedback. Member satisfaction is very important to our club. The Board invites parents to send feedback via email throughout the season. Contact information is available on the club website. If you have a question or concern during practice or a meet, please trust the coaches will deal with any immediate concern. If needed, parents may approach the coach after practice to set up a mutually convenient time to talk.

PURPOSE: To establish consistent expectations for parents' behavior. As a parent/guardian, I understand the important growth and developmental support that my athlete's participation fosters. I also understand it is essential to provide the coaching staff with respect and the authority to coach the team. By signing this code of conduct, I agree with the following statements:

  1. I will set the right example for our athletes by demonstrating sportsmanship and showing respect and common courtesy at all times to the team members, coaches, competitors, officials, parents, and all facilities
  2. I will get involved by volunteering, observing practices, cheering at meets, and talking with my athlete and their coach about their progress
  3. I will refrain from coaching my athlete from the stands during practices or meets
  4. I understand that criticizing, name-calling, use of abusive language or gestures directed toward coaches, officials, volunteers, and/or any participating athlete will not be tolerated
  5. I will respect the integrity of the officials
  6. I will communicate concerns according to the guidelines set by Sea Dragons Swim Club

PURPOSE: To establish consistent expectations for athletes’ behavior. By signing this code of conduct, I agree to the following statements:

  1. I will respect and show courtesy to my teammates and coaches at all times
  2. I will demonstrate good sportsmanship at all practices and meets
  3. I will set a good example of behavior and work ethic for my younger teammates and will train appropriately for my experience, and my personal and team goals
  4. I will be respectful of my teammates’ feelings and personal space. Athletes who exhibit sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise inappropriate behavior will be faced with consequences
  5. I will show respect for all facilities and other property (including locker rooms) used during practices, competitions, and team activities
  6. I will refrain from foul language, violence, behavior deemed dishonest, offensive, or illegal
  7. If I disagree with an official’s call, I will talk with my coach and not approach the official directly
  8. I will obey all of the Sea Dragons Swim club policies on cell phone and locker room use and I will obey all of USA Swimming’s rules and codes of conduct

When I check the box on the SDSC registration module for Parent and Athlete code of conduct:

  • I understand that should I conduct myself in such a way that brings discredit or discord to Sea Dragons Swim Club, or USA Swimming, I voluntarily subject myself to disciplinary action. Sea Dragons Swim Club maintains the right to terminate any membership with/without cause in the interest of our vision, mission and objectives.
  • My athlete understands that if my athlete should violate this code of conduct, my swimmer will be subject to disciplinary action determined by my coaches and the swim club’s board of directors.
