Dallas Mustangs

Greetings, Mustangs!

Hopefully at some of our Mustang families got away from the Texas heat during our annual end of summer break. Looking back on the summer, WOW – it got pretty crazy at times with all of the training, meets and travel. But now that it’s over and we’ve had a little bit of time to get our breath back, we can begin to look forward. For starters, we are excited to be getting back to Loos when we start back in September. Fall practices at Loos, Highland Park, White Rock and SMU will begin September 3 at normal times (please refer to the website for those details). Also, we will be having our Main Tryouts on August 28 at Loos, HP, and WR at 6:00pm, so please spread the word and encourage your friends to get involved with swimming and the Mustangs!

The month of July and the beginning of August was a busy time as our swimmers prepared for fast swims at the championship meets at all levels. The upper-level championship meets began at the University of Texas in Austin for the Sectional Championships. Erin Trahan and Henry Wang led our point scorers, and our women’s relay teams finished in the top eight in two out of the three relays offered. We switched gears and spent the next week in Rockwall for the Medal Madness Meet, which was a fun meet for many of our lower level swimmers and many had multiple best times.

Things really ramped up the weekend of July 25-28, when many of our upper-level swimmers traveled to the Texas Age Group Championships (TAGS) in Austin and to the American Long Course Championships (ALC) in Lewisville. At TAGS, our top female and male point scorers were Katherine Yao and Ruihan Zhu. Katherine finished in the top eight in four individual events (2nd in the 400 IM) and contributed on all of the 13-14 girls relays, helping 3 out of the 5 relays to finish in the top eight. Ruihan Zhu had a meet he’ll remember for a while as he earned top honors in the 50 and 100 breast and a second-place finish in the 200 breast. In all three events, Ruihan broke the team record. He also chipped in to help two relays score valuable points. Abby Tchoukaleff was our top female performer at ALC, scoring in four out of the five events that she swam and helping our relays to 3rd, 5th, and 6th place finishes. Stephen Cheng led our men’s team at ACL, with his top performance resulting from a third-place finish in the 200 back.

The Futures meet in Iowa was one of four Futures meets around the country and our top performers were Brooke Adams, who went three for three best times and Will McKinney, who scored points in two out of his three individual events and narrowly missed the team record in the 200 breast.

We ended the season with our fastest swimmers traveling to Stanford University in California for United States Swimming’s Junior and Senior National Championships. At both of these meets, our swimmers squared off against the top swimmers in the country. It was a great opportunity for them to take a step closer to making Olympic trial qualifying times for next summer’s meet. Our top performers in those meets were Erin Trahan and Henry Wang, both going two for two best times in their events.
