Hello from the Head Coach

Hello from Head Coach

RACE families,

Welcome to the beginning of our 5th year as team RACE!  We had a very successful spring and summer and are looking forward to another successful season!  Before we talk about to the upcoming year, I would like to recap come of the highlights of the last season.

RACE had an impressive showing at all of our Championship meets this summer.  The first meet wasBC Champs that we held right here in Rockwall at the end of July.  Out of the 93 swimmers that participated for RACE, we had 197 Top 8 finishes!!  Out of the 197 Top 8 finishes, RACE had 11 swimmers win events.  These swimmers included:

·        Maya White, 9-10 200 IM

·        Grayson Tidwell, 9-10 50 free

·        Marcus Stencel, 8&Under 200 free

·        Ellie Samples, 9-10 200 free

·        Joshua Richardson, 9-10 100 breast, 100 back, 100 free, 100 fly

Congratulations to all the swimmers that participated in the BC Champs meet this summer.  It was a huge success!

The next competition was the A/BB Champs meet that was held in Mansfield on August 2-4.  RACE had 63 swimmers participate and had 88 Top 8 finishes.  Out of those 88 Top 8 finishers, RACE had 4 winners.  These swimmers included:

·        Margot Little, 11-12 200 fly

·        Johann Kuipers, 11-12 800 free

·        Emma Hultquist, 11-12 200 back, 400 free

·        Kiley Harmon, 10&Under 200 free

Congratulations A/BB swimmers!!

The Texas Age Group Swimming (TAGS) Championships is held in Austin every summer at the end of July.  This Championship meet has very fast qualification standards (just a little faster than AAA times) and showcases the fastest 14&Under swimmers from across the state.  RACE had 14 TAGS qualifiers this summer and had 21 Top 16 finishes.  Jace Brown came away from the meet with three wins in the 11-12 age-group.  Those events included the 50 back, 100 fly, and 50 fly.  Congratulations to Jace and the rest of his TAGS teammates!

United States Swimming is divided into four “Zones:”  Central, Eastern, Southern, Western.  Each Zone is comprised of multiple LSCs (Local Swim Committees) that compete against each other to try and become the Zone Team Champion.  Our LSC, North Texas Swimming, belongs to the Southern Zone.  RACE sent 6 swimmers to join other North Texas Swimming athletes in Greenville, South Carolina for the Southern Zone Age Group Championships in the beginning of August.  Out of those 6 swimmers, RACE had 4 Top 8 finishes.  One of those swimmers, Haylie Harbin, finished at the top of the podium in the 800 free.  Congratulations to those Zone participants.  You represented North Texas Swimming and RACE very well!

We had two swimmers compete in theSectional Championship in Conroe, Texas.  Those two swimmers produced 3 Top 16 finishes with one of the highlights coming from Raena Eldridge, who achieved the US Open Championship qualification standard in the 100 fly.  Her time of 1:01.99 ties exactly last year’s Olympic Trials standard.  Her time in the 100 fly made her the first RACE swimmer to ever qualify for the US Open.

Our final Championship meet of the summer was held in Irvine, California, August 5-9.  The Junior National Championship is the premier National competition for swimmers 18&Under.  RACE swimmer Jared Bulter went into the meet qualified 141st in the 200 back and 50th in the 200 IM.  He started out the meet jumping up 84 places in the 200 back and ended up 57th.  In Jared’s best event, the 200 IM, he came into the meet ranked 50th.  He jumped up 31 places after his preliminary swim and became the first RACE swimmer ever to qualify for a final at a Junior National Championship meet!  Along with making finals, Jared’s time in the 200 IM qualified him for the US Open Championship.

Congratulations to all RACE swimmers, from beginners all the way up through the Senior Group, on a great summer season.   I will send out another message to the RACE membership soon about the upcoming season.  Thanks, and we’ll see you at the pool!
