The 2014-15 academic year finds a remarkable 45 Orinda Aquatics alums competing in collegiate aquatic sports across our country: Swimming (37 including 9 seniors), Water Polo (8) and new this year: Triathlons (2!). They are carrying on OA's tradition of excellence in academics, character, leadership (Courtney Whyte - team captain at Notre Dame), commitment and continue to develop as swimmers by getting lifetime best times. While some of the collegiate swimmers had peak meets in November/December, many did not so we look forward to seeing what their February Conference Championships...

Last weekend, Megan Howard (Sophomore- US Naval Academy) and Allison Light (Junior - UCLA) competed in the first-ever Women’s Collegiate Triathlon National Championships title in Florida. Megan finished as Navy's top competitor finishing in 1:08.19 for sixth place finish. Right behind, in 9th place and second for UCLA, was Allie (1:09.38). The inaugural women-only championship was established as one of the early steps in recognizing triathlon’s status as an NCAA Emerging Sport for Women. OA Alums turn into Collegiate Triathletes! Two OA alums have added new “gear” to their repertoire! Last spring, while working on her engineering degree, Allie Light (OA ’12) joined UCLA’s Triathlon Team (Spring 2014 Female Champions). The season begins in January, so to date, Allie has only been in one race, the Goleta Beach Long Course Triathon (1 mile swim, 22 mile bike, 5 mile run), where she came in second in her age group (20-24) with a time of 2:09.47 and third woman overall. Orinda Aquatics will have a strong showing at the PacSwim awards to be held in October! Not only was it announced that Max Cruz has won the Outstanding Swimmer Award for 11 year old boys (short course) but Will Nagle was named Outstanding Swimmer for an 11 year old boy (long course). Saturday was the 6th annual NorCal Kids Triathlon held at Miramonte High School in Orinda and Orinda Aquatics' 4th year as a sponsor of this event. 300 kids aged 4 to 18 competed in the Sprint Triathlon. The event is organized to promote healthy lifestyles in children, introduce youth to a sporting event they may not have tried and to also raise monies for the Orinda Foundation which supports many events in the local community. All-Star Selection: Sr group swimmers Jolen Griffin and Justin Lammert have been selected to represent Pacific Swimming August 7-9 at the 2014 North American Challenge Cup in Veracruz, Mexico. Congratulations!

Coached by Ronnie, Mary Ashby and Talbot Jacobs competed for Orinda Aquatics at the 2014 Speedo Junior National (long course) held in Irvine, California. Ashby swam the 50 free ((27.30), 100 free (59.06), 100 back (1:05.64), and time trialed the 200 free where she earned a personal best 2:07.76. Orinda Aquatics' Senior and Collegiate swimmers made a strong showing at the recent CA/NV Sectionals Championships held in Clovis. The team finished second in the meet scoring nearly 1,300 points.
