Jason Roberts Head Coach

Coach Jason will be entering his 5th season at Countryside YMCA this fall. He comes here after spending nearly 17 years at the Northern Kentucky Clippers and 2 years at Foxjets Swim Team in Minnesota. Jason has been very fortunate to work with great swimmers, coaches and adminstrators over the years. 

Coach Jason has coached swimmers that have represented Team USA as members of the USA Junior National Team, USA National Team and the NCSA All-Star Team. While coaching these swimmers he has traveled to Hong Kong, China, Ireland and Hawaii as a coach. 

As the Head Age Group Coach and Head Coach of the Northern Kentucky Clippers he worked on building one of the top programs in the State of Ohio and the country. The Clippers became the 1st team in many years to beat the Cincinnati Marlins at the Ohio J.O. Meet. His teams went on to be Top 3 in 27 of his 29 seasons and were Champions 8x. Coach also produced the first 16 Olympic Trial qualifiers in Clippers team history. 

Coach Jason has been awarded  NCSA Coach of the Year, Ohio Coach of the Year and has been awarded the ASCA "Certificate of Excellence" award. 

Outside the pool, Jason enjoys spending time with his lovely wife(Branden) and children (Hannah & Sam). 

Adam Warner Head Age Group Coach

Coach Adam grew up in Norwalk, Ohio and swam for Vacationland Swim Club and Norwalk High School in which he still holds the school records in the 200 I.M. and 100 Breaststroke. He went on to swim for Hiram College and after he graduated, he has competed in U.S. Masters Swimming since 2011. Adam holds two top ten times from 2012 (50 & 200 Breaststroke) and five from 2021 (50, 100, 200 Breaststroke, 50 back & 200 I.M.) from masters competitions in his age group.

Adam took over as the head high school and middle school coach for Huron, Ohio from 2010—2013. In 2013, he joined the United States Army as an Officer. Since his time in the U.S. Army, Adam has been a high school, YMCA & USA coach for Wapakoneta, Ohio swim teams since 2017 and started with Countryside YMCA in 2021. Over his coaching career, he has developed and trained over 21 individual & 9 relay state qualifiers, which includes 5 top 8 finishes at the Ohio High School Championships.

Su Burns Lead Coach JR1

Su has been with the CY coaching staff since 1991 and has over 49 years experience as a swim coach. Su has coached  at Countryside for the past 28 years. Prior to that, she coached for the Middletown YMCA for eight years as well as for many Cincinnati and Middletown area summer swim teams. Su was also the head coach for Middletown High School varsity swim teams for 9 years.

Her competitive swimming experience includes 10 years with the Cincinnati Coca Cola AAU swim team (now-disbanded), four years with Cincinnati Oak Hills High School and four years with Miami University (captain junior and senior years). She was a NAGWS collegiate national qualifier her junior and senior years. 
Her sons, Brett and Matt, were National Team swimmers for the Torpedoes. In July 2000, Su was honored as SWY Long Course Coach of the Year, and in March 2003, was inducted into the Southwest Ohio YMCA Swim League Hall of Fame. 
Su has a BS and MEd from Miami University and is now retired from the Middletown City School District after 35 years of teaching physical education. She was also  employed by the Cincinnati Area Chapter of the American Red Cross as a Water Safety Educator for 25 years. She is now a founding member (and board member) of Cincinnati Aquatic Training Services.

Su’s philosophy on coaching is one of keeping the “fun” in fundamentals. She also emphasizes the YMCA character development values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith.

Amy Sosnowski Lead Coach JR1

Amy has coached at Countryside since 2002 primarily working with the 8 & unders.  She has also been an assistant coach for Kings High School for one year and Ursuline Academy for 5 years.  While at Ursuline, she helped lead the Lions to two High School State Championships in 2013 and 2014.  Amy was also an assistant coach at Rolling Hills swim club from 1982-1986 and head coach in 1987.

Amy grew up swimming in the Cincinnati area where she competed for Fairfield YMCA, Rolling Hills Swim Club, and Badin High School.  She went on to compete at the collegiate level for the University of Notre Dame.  While there, she was twice voted MVP and held multiple University records.  She graduated from Notre Dame in 1988 with a BBA in Accounting.

Amy currently resides with her husband Jim in Maineville.  They have 3 grown children, Mandi, Matthew and TJ who all swam for Countryside when they were younger. Amy believes that swimming should be fun while developing the skills and confidence they need to progress in the sport. 

Julie Riesen Lead Coach JR2

Coach Julie started swimming at 6 years old for the Celina Dolphins/ AMFY in Celina, Ohio, then for Dayton Northwest YMCA from 1992-1996 and joined Countryside YMCA in 1996 until graduation in 2002. Coach Julie was an 8-time YMCA National Qualifier, 4-year Varsity Swimmer at Lebanon Highschool, LHS MVP and Team Captain, CY Team Captain, 3-time Top 16 YMCA National Finalist and swam for the University of Toledo. Julie has been coaching at CY since 2018. She loves coaching 10 and unders and encouraging their passion for swimming. Julie has been in the Torpedo Family for over 25 years- swimmer, alumni, and now coach/swim mom. Julie has 2 daughters who swim for CY: Keelyn and Delaney.

Brent Ketcham Lead Coach AG3

Brent began volunteering with the Yellow group in 2015.  Brent has an extensive coaching background that started in 1990.  1990-1998 Brent coached in Mt. Vernon, IN working with 6 & unders up through high school teams.  1998-1999 Brent was the Head Coach of Tecumseh Swim Club in IN.  1999-2000 he was the head coach for South West Indiana Aquatics in Evansville, IN.  2005-2006 Brent was the head coach at Robinson High School where he lead 6 swimmers to qualify for the North Carolina State Championships.  Brent's daughter Elizabeth currently swims in Age Group 4 for Countryside.

Nancy Cochran Lead Coach Senior 1

Nancy joined the Countryside Torpedoes coaching staff in 2017 and is in her second year as Lead Coach for Age Group 1. She is a native to the Greater Cincinnati area and began swimming at the age of 8. She continued swimming and diving competitively in the Northern Kentucky Swim League (NKSL) for 10 years, the Northern Kentucky Piranha’s (now disbanded), Dixie High School, Scott High School and lead the Taylor Mill Swim Club diving team for one year as Head Coach. 

Prior to her current position as AG1 Lead Coach, Nancy presided as a Swim Instructor at Countryside for two years, Assistant Coach for the Y’s Pre-competitive Swim Team for three, and coached one year as an Assistant Age Group Coach. She believes that it is important for swimmers to understand that despite their experience and current ability, they are each an important member of the team, that they develop a vision of success and have goals to achieve that vision. She strives to work with swimmers to close the gap on those goals by encouraging a good work ethic, stroke refinement, belief in self, developing a positive attitude and having fun! Nancy and her husband Paul have two children, Paul and Nathan. Nathan is currently swimming with the AG4 Torpedoes.

Bob Hiller Assistant Coach SR3

Bob has been a Countryside Y volunteer assistant coach since 1993.  Bob was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee and was the 1968 Tennessee State Swimming Champion in 400 IM, and 400 and 1500 Free.  He swam his freshman year for Doc Counsilman at Indiana University and played water polo 3 years for IU graduating in 1973 with a degree in English Literature.  Bob graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Law with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1976.   Retired now, Bob practiced law in Ohio and Kentucky for 42 years.

Bob's swim coaching career began in 1970 at the JCC in New Orleans for 2 summers during college, and continued in Cincinnati as a summer league coach in 1974-1975. He served an assistant coach under head coaches Charlie Hickcox and then Skip Kenney with the Cincinnati Marlins from 1975-1977.  In various swim seasons over the years Bob has coached all of the CY age groups, other than Su’s 8 & Unders.  Since 2002, Bob has exclusively assisted with the National/SR2 group.  Bob was inducted into the Southwest Ohio YMCA Swim League Hall of Fame and Countryside YMCA named Bob Volunteer of the Year in 2010.  

Bob and his wife Mean Jean have been members of CY since 1980.  They have 3 sons, Web, Dean and Cody, all of whom swam for CY.  Cody was a State Finalist in breaststroke for St. Xavier H.S. in 2007, was an Academic High School All-American that year, and swam on a couple of YMCA National Championship relays for CY.  Bob and Jeannie became grandparents in 2019, Thanks to Cody and his wife Clea, Bob and Jeannie are the grandparents of Felix and Violet who live near Bend, Oregon.  Bob has competed in triathlons since 1983, including the 1989 Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championship and as a member of the USA Masters Triathlon Team at the 2009 Maccabiah Games in Israel.  More recently, Bob competed for TEAM USA at the Long Course AquaBike World Championships in The Netherlands where he placed 2nd in his age group.

Jim German Assistant Coach SR2 & SR3
Jim started his swimming career as an age grouper for Ted Branin at Branhaven Swim Club in North Canton, Ohio. He went on to swim year-round as an Aqua Eagle under Coach Rob Snowberger. He swam high school for Glenwood then GlenOak High Schools in the mid-70's. Jim earned scholarships to swim Division I for Eastern Kentucky University and The University of Akron. 

Jim formally began coaching in 1978 as Head Coach of the Canton City Schools USA Swim Team at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio. In 1981 he became the Head Coach at the North Canton YMCA, North Canton, OH for four years. While finishing his business degrees at The University of Akron he became the Men's Assistant Swimming Coach from 1981-84. Additionally, Jim was the Assistant Coach at Indiana High School in Indiana, PA 1987-1991. From 2011-16 Jim coached Little Miami High School and Junior High School Swim Teams.  

Jim began coaching with the Countryside YMCA Torpedoes as a volunteer in 2004. During his Countryside coaching career he’s coached all age groups and abilities from novice to YMCA National Champions. Jim enjoys creating a positive high-energy team-oriented atmosphere where athletes can grow, mature, and exceed their limits through competitive swimming. As a former swimmer Jim understands the challenges of training, winning and losing, as well as balancing life and academics in and out of the pool.

His wife Liz is a swimming instructor at the Countryside YMCA. He has two sons, Wally and Jack. Both were former CY Torpedoes. Jack was a Division 1 All-American in the 50 yd freestyle and four time YMCA National Champion.

Rob Johnston Assistant Coach JR1

Rob Johnston is known as the old Y-Guy!  He has been involved in  competitive  swimming for more than  6 4 yea rs  as a  swimmer  (YMCA Age Group & College) , instructor, coach  ( YMCA and Special Olympics),  and  YMCA Aquatic and Executive Director .  He has been wet most of his life ! Rob  has taken  12 teams to the YMCA National  Swimming & Diving  Championships, and was Head Coach in 1991 & 1995 for the State of Pennsylvania at the Special Olympic World Games. Rob retired after a  45-year  career with the YMCA .   He and his wife Wendy relocated to  Maineville  to be closer to his two children and grandchildren .  Granddaughters  Emma  and Gracie   are  both members of  the  Countryside Y Swim Team. Rob volunteers here at the Y as a swimming instructor and  coach , and for his church.  

His philosophy for competitive swimming  is: fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals ! L earn the strokes correctly and the times will come.   The mo st important  thing  to teach our swimmers is  -  strive to beat yourself and you’ll be at  a few others in the meantime, and  HAVE FUN !

Matt Rhodenbaugh Assistant Coach AG3

Matt started coaching the 11-14yr old group in September 2015.  Matt has a lifetime of swimming experience and knowledge that he brings to Countryside. He swam for Cincinnati Marlins for 12 years and Oak Hills High School all four years qualifying for state his senior year.   He coached at Gamble Nippert Y in the early 90's.  Matt was a graduate of Ohio University where he swam all four years  currently work for Key Bank and have 2 daughters,  one that swims at Campbellsville University and one on the team that just committed to swim for University of Southern Indiana next year 2022.

Amy Winkler Assistant Coach Senior 2

Amy began coaching Countryside in the fall of 2015 with the Silver group.  She started swimming at age 7 for the Philipps Aquatic Club in Dayton.  At age 10 she started year round swimming for the Kettering YMCA and swam there until graduation from Alter High School.  Amy was a 4 year varsity swimmer at Alter and a 2 time YMCA National qualifier. Amy then went on to swim at Xavier University.  She was the head coach of the Philipps Aquatic Club for 4 years.  Led the team to 2 league championships.  Amy has also been a swim instructor at Blue Ash Y and Countryside Y.  Her two children Anna and Zach are currently swimming for the Torpedoes. Amy is a full time social work care manager for CareSource.

Aidan Combs Assistant Coach

Over the past eight years Aidan swam for the Cincinnati Marlins, Landen Stingrays, and Countryside Torpedoes. After suffering a back injury, he decided to help Brandon coach Senior 1 on and off during his senior year of high school.  Aidan graduated in May of 2020, and he currently attends Ohio University. He is looking forward to joining their club swim team in the future, once students are brought back to campus and club activities can begin.     

Aidan’s commitment to the Countryside Torpedoes, attending practices and assisting the coaches shows by example that a strong work ethic and determination are crucial in progressing in the sport, and he hopes to pass those values on to his swimmers.  He will strive to help swimmers refine their technique, stay focused in practice, and believe in their own abilities.
