Cheryl Max Coaching Staff

Cheryl Max our Head Novice Coach. "Miss Cheryl", as she is known to so many of her athletes, first became associated with GCSTO in 1998 when her son joined our swimming team. Cheryl quickly became involved in the team as a volunteer. She worked in all aspects of volunteer coordination & meet operations with the team. By 2002 Cheryl was hired to work as a lesson instructor within our GCSS program where she quickly became the most requested instructor on staff. Soon thereafter she was offered the position of Head Novice Coach where she continues as the leader today while still teaching swimming lessons for us as still one of our most sought after and reliable instructors. As our Novice coach she is firm, yet understanding and holds her expectations high for our Novice swimmers. Her patience with younger athletes is amazing and she holds a tremendous ability to maintain control over these younger swimmers in practice so that practices are organized, efficient and effective. She's an absolutely amazing role model for our young swimmers and is one of the most incredible coaches that these swimmers could have as they are introduced to the sport of swimming.

From 2014-2018 she taught private swimming lessons at the Ohio University Aquatic Center in Athens, OH where she was also Operations Facility Supervisor from 2016-2018. She is currently employed as a Patient Access Coordinator at the Ohio State University Hospitals after graduating from Ohio University in May of 2018 with a major in Health Services and a minor Administration/Business. Shannon Max Coaching Staff

Shannon Max is our Head Level 1 Coach at Columbus Academy. She is entering her first year as the Head Coach of this group but has been around the pool, and around GCSTO, for many years. She has taught within our Swim School now since 2017 and has been one of our most sought after instructors since that time. She also started working as an assistant coach for our Novice level that year assisting her mother, Cheryl, with that program. She has had tremendous success and gained much respect from her coaching peers on staff as a result of her abilities on deck. Her success has come in from her attention to details and her consistent ability to hold her swimmers responsible to make changes. She doesn't just tell them to make changes but insures that these changes are made and subsequently used by the swimmer. She also maintains excellent control over the swimmers in practice so that practices are efficient and effective. She expects much out of her swimmers and insures that they constantly push themselves to be better on a day to day basis. Shannon grew up swimming for GCSTO, the Reynoldsburg Marlins, and the Reynoldsburg High School swim team. She started her coaching career as an assistant coach for the Reynoldsburg Marlins. She has 2 daughters, Ava & Jillian, both of which currently swim for the team.
