COVID-19 Protocol Updates - 1-14-21

Nikolaus Balmer

Dear ABLY Parent,

This is a long update, but please take a moment to carefully read all of the information below and read the following document: COVID-19 Protocols

General COVID 19-Protocol Updates as of 1-14-21

Please note that the following changes have been made to our COVID-19 protocols, and will remain in effect for all Barracuda athletes (Age Group, Masters and Pre-Competitive) at both M.E. Lyons and Campbell County YMCA’s until further notice. All information is based on current CDC and local health department guidelines.

Here are a few general rules to remember if you get lost:

  1. Monitor yourself for symptoms at least once daily.

  2. Stay home if you are symptomatic or not feeling well and stay home if someone in your household is symptomatic or not feeling well. Even if it does not turn out to be COVID, it is better to miss one day here than one week later!!!!!

  3. Stay home while you are waiting on test results. See above.

  4. There are two different tests - a rapid and a PCR. Either is an appropriate form of proof of a test result, but please keep in mind that each has limitations and is not perfect and this is why we must also maintain robust masking, distancing, and quarantine protocols.

COVID-19 Exposure Protocols mandated by Hamilton County Health Dept.

Please see the following link to the updated Exposure/Quarantine Protocol that is in effect as of Thursday, Jan 14. All changes are listed in red: COVID-19 Protocols

The YMCA Chief Operating Officer will make final decisions on all COVID-19 cases and associated competitions and practices.

Returning to Practice After a Positive Test -  REQUIRED BY THE STATE

All athletes who test positive for COVID-19, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic may not return to practice or competition for 14 days AND until a documented medical exam is performed clearing the athlete to return to sports.  The documented medical exam must specifically include an assessment of the cardiac risk of high-intensity exercise due to potential myocarditis occurring in some COVID-19 patients.

Most school districts have now approved recommendations to implement newly released Governor DeWine and Hamilton County Department of Health approved K-12 school quarantine guidelines.  The new guidelines apply  ONLY  to K-12 classroom settings - not to athletic settings. Neither Ohio’s Health Official nor the OHSAA have adjusted contact tracing and quarantine requirements for extra and co-curricular activities. School-sponsored extra and co-curricular activities therefore MUST still follow the current close contact quarantine guideline of fourteen (14) days. As a result, we will continue to have a robust protocol in place for exposures occurring during all ABLY sponsored activities (see attached document). The school will remain in contact as they have in the past regarding co-curricular exposures and the coaching staff must be immediately notified with the date the athlete was in contact with the person, and the eligible date to return if provided.

Masks are required to cover the mouth and nose while in the building and during all exercise activities. The only exceptions are aquatics activities and/or showers. Those of us with younger swimmers should do better to reinforce that masks must still be worn in the locker rooms at all times.

COVID-19 Contact Tracing Protocols

The coaching staff must be notified immediately if an athlete has been in contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19, including any members of their household. If the athlete is determined by school, workplace, or the Health Department to quarantine, the coaching staff must be immediately notified with the date the athlete was in contact with the person, and the eligible date to return if provided.

Additional COVID-19 Safety Tips

  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds.

  • Use hand sanitizer frequently.

  • Maintain 6-foot distances at all times.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes into your sleeve/elbow.

We thank you all for your continued patience during this turbulent time and for your continued support of our program.
