Chris McKinney Head Coach

Chris comes to the Makos program from the Springfield YMCA (SPY) team. Chris began swimming at the age of six for a local summer team in Springfield, and the next year joined the Springfield Y until he was 16. He also swam for Shawnee High School until his graduation in 1990. After high school, Chris joined the United States Navy and served in both Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He is a proud veteran whose swimming background stuck with him as he was assigned designated crew for lifeboat deployment. Thank you for your service, Chris!

After returning from his service, Chris began coaching and states that new opportunity was, “Life changing to say the least!” Chris has experience coaching all ages and abilities in club, YMCA, high school, collegiate level and even has produced Olympic Trail qualifiers! Chris believes the best part about being a swim coach is seeing the reaction and smiles when a goal is achieved.

Time outside the pool is spent with family and motorsports- anything with a motor and the ability to go fast is a passion!

Coach Chris is looking forward to working with the swimmers, coaches and parents to make the Makos program the best it can be!

Alex Muni Assistant Coach
Alex is a 2018/2020 graduate of Miami University with a bachelor of science in sport leadership and management (coaching concentration), master of science in sport leadership and sport psychology.
Alex started swimming when he was 16 and has loved the sport ever since. His second year swimming and last year swimming in high school, he qualified for the Ohio district meet in two relays. In the medley relay, Alex and his team broke a 14 year old team record that was unbroken for five more years. Since high school, Alex has swam with the Miami University club swim team and with Miami University’s Masters swim team. In six years with college club, Alex qualified for all six national championships in breaststroke events. With the U.S. Masters team, Alex qualified for a total of twelve national championship meets (6 SCY/6 LCM) and has finished in the top ten in the 50/100/200 yd./m breaststroke events several times at nationals. Alex’s swimming career has allowed him to travel as far north/west as Minneapolis, MN, south as Auburn, AL, and as east as Ithica, NY. One of his favorite memories was his first long course season after high school; with no coach and having to plan every bit of his training and competition schedule leading up to USMS LC Nationals, Alex wasns’t sure he’d achieve his goals. That is, until he shared a lane with Olympic Trial finalist Josh Schneider. Alex, Josh, and his coach really hit it off and for the next two and a half months, they trained together on the days the pool was in LC; Alex for USMS LC Nationals and Josh for the 2015 Pan American Games. Josh would go on to win gold in the 50 free, silver in the medley relay, and bronze in the freestyle relay for Team USA while Alex medaled top ten in the 100/200 breaststroke and eleventh in the 50 freestyle. While continuing to coach Alex will train and compete as much as he can in the hopes of one day adding "USMS national champion" to his resumé.
Alex has been coaching swimming for seven years as of May 2020. He joined the MAKOS at the start of the long course 2017 summer season. Alex’s broad coaching history has involved coaching high school, coaching a highly ranked and competitive summer league team in Cincinnati for four years, as well as creating and volunteer coaching Miami University’s club swim team’s high performance group. Alex is very excited to continue coaching Silver group and despite the pandemic, he believes the best is yet to come.
