Chris McKinney Head Coach

Coach Chris is entering his 4 year leading the Makos. In that short time the Makos have set 110 plus New Team Records. The team has swimmers achieve numerous Junior Olympic, Sectional, and USA Swimming time standards. The team has also had multiple High School District and State qualifiers. The team has had multiple USA Swimming TOP 50 ranked age group swimmers. The program continues to put swimmers in NCAA collegiate swimming programs.

Chris comes to the Makos program from the Springfield YMCA (SPY) team. Chris began swimming at the age of six for a local summer team in Springfield, and the next year joined the Springfield Y until he was 16. He also swam for Shawnee High School until his graduation in 1990. After high school, Chris joined the United States Navy and served in both Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He is a proud veteran whose swimming background stuck with him as he was assigned designated crew for lifeboat deployment. Thank you for your service, Chris!

After returning from his service, Chris began coaching and states that new opportunity was, “Life changing to say the least!” Chris has experience coaching all ages and abilities in club, YMCA, high school, collegiate level and even has produced Olympic Trail qualifiers! Chris believes the best part about being a swim coach is seeing the reaction and smiles when a goal is achieved.

Time outside the pool is spent with family and motorsports- anything with a motor and the ability to go fast is a passion!

Coach Chris looks forward to working with the swimmers, coaches and parents on a daily basis to make the Makos program the best it can be!

Education:

Gabrielle is a current student here at Miami University receiving a Bachelors of Science in K-12 Inclusive Special Education with a certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders. She is expected to graduate in May of 2023.

Swimming:

She is from the Columbus, OH area and swam competitively for 10 years. She swam for Westerville Aquatic Club (WAC) for seven years and for Buckeye Swim Club her senior year of high school. During her time on those teams she came down to Miami numerous times and competed in the MAKO Invite, Senior Champs, and Senior Circuit, which is one of the reasons she decided to come to Miami in the first place.

She competed for Olentangy High School all four years as a varsity swimmer and was a captain her senior year. She competed in the 100 butterfly and the 500 free all throughout high school.

Swimming has been a part of her life since she was 6 months old when her mom first got her in the water for swim lessons. While living in Ashland, OH she would watch the college team practice prior to her own swim lessons. She looked up to those swimmers and wanted to be like them one day. When moving back to Columbus she began taking Swim America lessons which helped her grow in her swimming abilities and made her look forward to being able to attend her first practice in the fall. Her dedication to the sport started young. She would do all that she could in order to become the best swimmer she could be. While never being the fastest or making it to districts, what she put in she was able to see make a difference in her swimming. Her favorite memory comes from her first time breaking :30 in the 50 freestyle her sophomore year of high school. One of her close friends was screaming when she finished her race only to look up and see the :29 in her lane on the scoreboard. It is moments like that where seeing all the hard work finally paying off makes getting up early for practice and turning down the social event worth it.

Coaching:

Gabrielle has been with MAKOS since the start of spring training in April 2021. She has been a certified Swim America coach since the age of fourteen which allowed her to get her foot in the door of wanting to coach. She was also an assistant coach for Kinsale’s summer swim and dive team (Powell, OH) her senior year of high school. She grew up in the water and am so excited to share that love and passion for this amazing sport with your children!

While she is no longer competing after having faced a knee injury throughout high school and eventually having surgery during J-term of 2019, being on the side of the pool, coaching and cheering, helps her still show her passion for others competing in this sport. Gabrielle grew up with a wide range of coaches which helped her see that a coach that cares is important to success in the sport. She has certain coaches that helped her see her true potential which is who she models herself after now. She is dedicated to helping your children demonstrate their potential both in and out of the pool, as well as helping them get to their own goals. She is so excited to get to know the families and be here in any way everyone associated with this team needs!
