Coaches and Directors
Originally from Canfield, CJ has a long history of swimming in the Youngstown area. She began swimming at Canfield Tennis and Swim Club at the age of 6 and during her age-group career swam for Warren Swim Club, Y-Neptune’s and the original Penguin Aquatic Club (PAC) which is now PS. CJ went to the University of South Florida on a swim scholarship and later transferred to YSU where she swam and ran cross country. At YSU, she received her bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, and she has worked in various aspects of the wellness field since graduating. Currently, she is part-time faculty at YSU in the Kinesiology and Sports Science Department.
As a coach she has worked at Boardman Swim Club under Terry O'Halloran (where she currently serves as Head Coach in the summer), was head coach at Firestone Area Swim Team, assistant coach at Canfield High School under Andrea Linelli, and Carson Tiger Sharks in Nevada. She has served as an assistant coach at Penguin Swimming since 2008. During her time at PS, she has coached many high school state finalists, was selected as a member of the Lake Erie Zones coaching staff and served as Lake Erie Zone Open Water team coach.
CJ lives in Boardman with her two children, Mikel and River. Mikel is a student at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah and is a member of the women’s swim team. River is a member of Penguin Swimming and swims for Boardman High School.
Kelsey was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia where she swam competitively from age 7 under Bill Forrester. Throughout her career, she went on to qualify and compete at Junior Nationals, Senior Nationals, and the Olympic Trials in both 2008 and 2012. She received a swimming scholarship at Auburn University where I swam from 2008-2012 and competed at conference championships. After graduating with a major in Psychology, she returned to Savannah and coached for her former club team, Georgia Coastal Aquatics Team (GCAT) under coach Bill Forrester. She then moved to Macon, Georgia for graduate school and coached for Swim Macon (SMAC) under head coaches Lee Stockslager and Jason Swaim, as well as for Stratford Academy for one season. Following this, she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where she coached for Swim Atlanta (SWAT) under Andy Griffin. Kelsey has experience with coaching all age groups and developmental levels, and has assisted swimmers with accomplishing various level of goals, including state qualifying standards, junior nationals, senior nationals, and acquiring college scholarships.
Kelsey completed her doctorate in psychology with a focus on children, and she plans to earn her license and begin practicing in the area. In her free time, Kelsey enjoys spending time with her family and friends and playing with her two dogs.
Coach Kelsey is in her second season as a member of the Youngstown State Men's and Women's swimming and diving program. She was named an assistant coach in April 2021.
Kelsey will be coaching at Penguin Swimming with Brad Smith and
working with our Elite College group. We are very lucky to have
Kelsey on staff.
Reagan most recently served as an assistant for the men's and
women's programs at Wisconsin-Whitewater. She both UWW programs to
third-place finishes at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Championships in 2021.
Prior to her assistant role with the Warhawks, she was a graduate
assistant coach at Edinboro University for two seasons. As graduate
assistant, Regan helped the Fighting Scots set six school records
and qualify a pair of student-athletes for the NCAA Division II
Championships. At Edinboro, she was responsible for the design and
administration of training programs, management of home meets,
recruiting, instruction and maintenance of the program's social
media accounts.
Reagan graduated with a bachelor's in health and physical
education from Edinboro in 2016. She obtained her master's in
teacher leadership from Edinboro in 2020.

Caileigh Purcell begins her first year with Penguin Swimming in
2023 and will coach the Senior Group. Caileigh, who was previously
the head swimming and diving coach at Bethany College, is in her
first season as an assistant for the YSU Penguin Swim Team. She
joined the staff in July 2022.
Purcell spent two years as the head coach of both the men's and
women's programs at Bethany.
Prior to Bethany, she has served as the assistant coach for boys'
and girls' swimmers at the Spencer Family YMCA. Additionally,
Purcell has served as swim lesson coordinator for Pittsburgh Elite
Aquatics for the past year.
Purcell attended Clarion University, where she graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts with a focus in Athletic Coaching. While attending Clarion she competed on the Golden Eagles swim team for two seasons before having to retire due to injury. Purcell has her Master's in Physical Education from the University of Arkansas.
The Cecil, Pa., native, attended Canon McMillan where she was a four-year WPIAL swimmer and holds records in the 200 free, and 400 free relay.
Brooke Schuette is from Wauseon, Ohio and she began swimming for the Wauseon Aquatic Swim Club at the age of 4. During her time at Wauseon Aquatic she was a qualifier for the Junior Olympics and Central Zones. Once on the Wauseon High School swim team, she was captain for three years. Brooke was a 4-year letter winner, 4-time sectional qualifier, 4-time district qualifier, an 8-time district champion, 4-time state qualifier, and a 3rd place finisher in the state meet her senior year. She is currently working on her nursing degree at YSU and also a member of the YSU Penguin Swim Team. She has been a lifeguard for 3 years and has coached the 12 and under age group for 6 seasons. When she is not swimming or studying, she likes to paint lots of canvases and eat!
Hannah hails from Columbus Ohio. She is 21 years old and began swimming for summer rec Canal Winchester dolphins at age 7. By age 9 she was swimming year-round for Greater Columbus Swim Team of Ohio. She Qualified for Speedo Sectionals at age 14 (2014) in 50 free and then got her Futures at age 16 (2016) also in 50 free. Hannah has been lifeguard certified and teaching swim lessons since age 16. She attended the OHSAA State meet on the relay and won OCC’s (school conference) in the 50 free or 100 free or both every year (2014-2018). She served as team captain of club and high school teams. Hannah wanted to swim college and Division I and Youngstown State University was the best fit both in the water and classroom for her. She is a criminal justice major, law enforcement track, going into her senior year.
Mikel grew up in New Springfield, Ohio. She began swimming at the age of 5 in Carson City, NV for the Carson Tiger Sharks. She began her area career with the YSL at Firestone Area Swim Team at age 6 and then the Boardman Tennis and Swim Club from age 9 to 18. Her USA Swimming career with Penguin Swimming began at 6 and she was there through age 19. She swam in high school originally for Springfield but swam her last 3 years at Boardman High School. Mikel was an AAC, NEAC, and Sectional champion several times. She qualified for the OHSAA State Meet her senior year for Boardman High School. Mikel is also the BHS record holder in the 50 free. Mikel attended Dixie State University in St. George, Utah, where she was a member of the women's swim team as a freshman. Mikel transferred home to YSU where her major is Early Education and she especially loves working with the 8 and unders. Mikel was a junior coach at BTSC since she was 12 and has served two summers as assistant coach. Mikel lives in Boardman with her mother, Coach CJ, and brother River.
Brad took over as Head Swimming and Diving Coach at Youngstown State University in the summer of 2019. He has done an amazing job with the YSU Men’s and Women’s teams, and we are lucky to have him on staff. Brad coaches our Elite College group with his YSU assistant Kelsey Reagan.
Smith previously served as the Head Women's and Men's Swimming and Diving Coach at Binghamton for five years before coming to YSU in the summer of 2019. He also spent two campaigns as the Head Coach at Western Colorado, and he was an assistant at Maine from 2009-2012.
Brad is a 2007 graduate of Vermont where he was a 4-year letter winner for the Catamounts. Following his college career he spent two years as the Director of Women’s Swimming Operations at Vermont and also was the men’s club team coach.
