Chris Van Slooten Head Coach

Many of us have at least one person who was instrumental in shaping their career. My 8th grade United States History teacher was that person. Mrs. Bakita was an electrifying teacher who demanded the best from her students. She possessed the ability to look into each student, see who they could become and expect them to shine. This is when I decided to become a teacher. I soon began exploring a career in teaching by serving as an assistant swim lessons instructor at my local community pool. Eventually, I worked my way up to a lead instructor and then an assistant swim coach with my local community swim team. Upon graduating from Central Michigan University with a degree in Secondary Education, I entered the workforce as a substitute teacher and Assistant Swim Coach for the East Grand Rapids Girls Swim Team and  Head Swim Coach for the Northview High School Boys Swim Team. Soon I received my first teaching (White Pines Middle School) and coaching job for Grand Haven Boys Swim Team. I served as classroom teacher in Michigan, Virginia, and Texas for 17 years; now my classroom includes a pool.

I'm currently in my 30th year of coaching (4th with AESC). Prior to moving to Edmond, Oklahoma, I coached with the Virginia Gators, Alamo Area Aquatics Association, and Fork Union Military Academy. I have had the privilege of working with some outstanding coaches who have taught me many lessons. I have also had the pleasure of coaching hundreds of young people who have helped shape my life. Among those swimmers (and teams),  I have coached 12 High School All-Americans, two VISAA State Championships,  6 Summer Junior National qualifiers, 1 Summer Senior National qualifier, and 5 National Age Group Top 10 rankings.

Titus Knight Assistant Head Coach

I’ve been in the sport of swimming since I was age 6. I grew up near Arcadia, OK and that’s where I began my career. I attended Jenks High School my freshman and senior years. Between those years I swam in Austin, TX at Circle C Aquatics with Josh Davis.

I was blessed enough to qualify for Olympic Trials my Junior year which lead me to accept a full scholarship to Indiana University. I swam all 4 years at IU and was an NCAA All American.
After Indiana I moved to Huntington Beach, California where my coach career began on the close watch of Former Olympic and National team Head Coach Mark Schubert. It was here I competed in my 2nd Olympic Trials and coached Jr College, Age Group and Senior National level athletes.

I am extremely excited to be joining the American Energy Family and I hope to grow in my skills as a coach while helping your athletes achieve the utmost success in and out of the pool. I firmly believe in investing in the person not simply the athlete.

One day swimming will end and real life will begin it is our job as coaches to teach our young people how to conduct themselves in order to reach their full potential.

Susanne Smith Age Group Coach

I began teaching swim lessons to children and adults in the summer of 1999 at Swim Atlanta.  We moved to Macon, Ga in 2008 where both of my girls started swimming at Swim Macon.  Soon after I began assisting with the Age Groups and became the primary Coach for the Gold age group.  In 2013- 2015 I was also the Head Coach for the Stratford Academy Varsity swim team in Macon, Ga.  In August of 2015 we moved to Gainesville, FL where I took a break from coaching for three years and worked in student housing for the University of Florida.  We moved to Edmond in August of 2018 and in March of 2019 we discovered AESC and I realized how much I missed coaching and being at the pool every day.  I enjoy working with children of all ages and helping them reach their goals both mentally and physically.  I look forward to what the future holds with this team and feel very fortunate to be a part of it.

Alli Denison Lesson Coach/Assistant Age Group Coach

I was ten years old when I decided to take a leap of faith and enter into the swimming world and haven't looked back since. Something that I initially thought would be a fun hobby turned into a lifestyle, and I am blessed to have the opportunity to share my passion through the club that constructed it. Throughout my years of swimming, I’ve been blessed to have several amazing coaches who have helped me gain confidence not only in swimming but life outside the pool and that, more than anything, is the impact I too hope to have. I am so very blessed to be a part of the AESC family and look forward to everything this journey entails. See you at the pool!

I completed my collegiate athletics experience in the sport of rowing, where I represented the varsity squad at Oregon State University. Since college, I have continued to compete on a national level in the sport of rowing, representing the Green Racing Project in Craftsbury, VT and the OKC High Performance Center, where I currently train. I Have roughly 2 years of experience as a Competitive swim coach. I established an open-water masters swim program in Craftsbury, Vermont, and have also taught private and small group lessons at Patti’s Swim School in Castro Valley, California where I was born and raised.

Lyndsey Lohrey Assistant Coach

When I was 8 years old my dad had taken me and my sister up to the elementary school down the street to play on the playground. I remember the parking lots being packed with cars. After we had our fair share of fresh air, we walked over to the middle school to see what was going on. It was on that day I watched my very first swim meet and the very next day I walked onto the pool deck as a swimmer, never looking back. I grew up in a small town in southern Maine and then continued on to swim for Colorado State University, earning my degree in Nutrition and Food Science. I am thankful for all my years of swimming, all the places it has taken me and all the opportunities it has provided. My favorite part about coaching is seeing a swimmer's internal drive kick on and really start chasing a specific goal. Love watching that passion surface on its own.  And oddly enough, I still love the smell of chlorine and can easily take the best naps on a pool deck. GO AESC!

Derek Duckworth Assistant Coach

I like to keep an emphasis on building a strong work ethic while keeping a fun atmosphere!
