I am extremely pleased to announce that the Edwardsville YMCA has received a donation from the Allison Cassens Endowment, in honor and memory of the late Allison Cassens, for the establishment and implementation of a Competitive Swimming Scholarship.  The fund will be administered by the YMCA and a committee will be formed to award scholarship funds.

Allison Cassens was a YMCA kid.  At a very young age, Allison learned how to swim at the Edwardsville YMCA and participated in YMCA programs.  Years later, Allison participated in competitive swimming at a very high level and trained and competed throughout the country in National and International competitions.

Sadly, at the young age of 33, Allison passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  Prior to her passing she established a Trust Fund that could be used to support some of the passions that she had.  One of those was swimming and another focused on Early Childhood Development.  A donation from her Trust Fund led to the naming of the YMCA Early Childhood Development Center as the Allison Cassens Center.  The establishment of the Swimming scholarship Fund is in honor and memory of a special lady who loved the sport of competitive swimming.

2019 will mark the third year that graduating seniors at Edwardsville High school along with previous scholarship winners will be eligible to apply for the Allison Cassens Competitive Swimming Scholarship Award.   This award, made possible through the support of the Allison Cassens Endowment Fund, will recognize individuals for their commitment to YMCA competitive swimming.    Scholarship awards will range from $500 to $2000 based largely on availability of funding and the number of awardees.

Applicants meeting the following criteria are encouraged to apply for this award:

  • Be a 2019 graduating senior at Edwardsville High School, be an Edwardsville YMCA Breakers Swim Team swimmer for a minimum of 4 years, and, be a member of the Edwardsville High School team for 4 years OR be a previous winner of this scholarship.

  • Have plans to continue education at an accredited university or college and continue to pursue competitive swimming.

The Edwardsville YMCA is now accepting award applications which should also include a reflection essay on how YMCA competitive swimming or other Y programming has impacted the individuals youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.  The deadline to complete and submit the application is Friday, March 15th.   The recipient(s) will be announced at the 2019 Edwardsville YMCA Breakers Swim Team Banquet on Saturday, March 23th, 2019.

We encourage eligible swimmers, with the support of their parents, to consider applying for this scholarship in honor of a very special former YMCA member.
