New Head Coach!

Scott Derr

We are excited to announce that after a nearly three-month process, we have chosen Westley Mejias to be the next Head Coach for Portland Aquatic Club!

Many of you already know Westley as he has been working with our swimmers for much of this year. He has over 18 years of coaching experience, including starting both a club and university team. He is a two-time University Coach of the Year in Puerto Rico, winning a Puerto Rican collegiate championship five years after starting the program. He built a club team from the ground up, coaching four swimmers who made the national age group team in the process. He has been highly successful, moving every program he has led forward. Coach Westley impressed both the Selection Committee and Board with his passion for coaching, his knowledge about the sport, his embodiment of PAC values, and his track record. Coach Westley faced a very strong field of national and international candidates but we believe he is the best candidate to grow our club and make us one of the top teams in the state, while continuing to make PAC a great club for swimmers of all ages, backgrounds, and ability levels. Westley was enthusiastically endorsed by swimmers, a number of parents, and members of PAC’s coaching staff, who we anticipate will play critical roles in working with Westley during this transition and beyond.

We would like to thank all the coaches for their commitment and support during this challenging time over the last year and this selection process. We want to especially acknowledge and show our gratitude to Coach Scott who has done an amazing job stepping up into the Head Coach role these last few months. His leadership in all aspects of coaching has been invaluable, and we all are so grateful for his dedication, commitment, and support of our athletes. We are excited to see him continue to play a significant role in PAC’s future.

While there is still much work to do, we feel this is the beginning of an exciting new era for PAC! We imagine there may be questions about the transition so we’d like to hold a virtual town hall in the next few weeks to address these changes and formally introduce Coach Westley to the club. Stay tuned for details!
