2022 Sockeye Sprints Meet Recap

IST Communications

On September 24th, IST athletes and coaches traveled to the Snohomish Aquatic Center for our first meet of the season, Sockeye Sprints!

224 athletes attended this meet. Meet goals for the weekend included coming in with a relaxed mindset, a commitment to establish excellent early season meet habits, and demonstrating skills learned in the first few weeks of practice. For younger athletes in the Surge Groups, many were attending their first competition. These swimmers were able to experience all the aspects of a swim meet for the first time including: meet warm-up, checking in with their coaches before and after every race, enjoying time with teammates while staying attentive to the meet, and learning the flow of swim meets.

For more experienced athletes in the Sockeye and Senior squads, this meet presented the opportunity to re-establish the above meet habits and focus on solid swimming fundamentals. Since this was a sprint meet with exclusively shorter events, athletes focused on excellent starts, turns, and underwaters while incorporating skills learned in the first month of training.

This meet was only possible thanks to our incredible parent volunteers! It is a tremendous undertaking to host a swim meet within the first month of the season. Nearly 100 IST parents volunteered their time to serve as meet officials, announcers, timers, and food runners. It is only possible to host these competitions when we work together as a community and this one was an absolute hit! An additional thank you to our meet coordinators Corrie Canaday and Annie Choi for doing the lead-up and day-of work to make this event a success!

No matter the level of experience or age, athletes and parents of all ages showed tremendous Sockeye Spirit! As demonstrated thoughout this post in pictures taken by Coach Amanda.

Best time and new time standard reports will come as soon as meet results are available!
