Updates from Around USA Swimming

Sept. 2, 2021

APT Certifications Extended Due to System Issues

  USA Swimming has informed all LSC’s that the LEARN System is currently experiencing technical difficulties.  The LEARN system hosts the Athlete Protection Training (APT) Webinars so these difficulties prevent USAS members from renewing their APT certification prior to their expiration dates.  This issue impacts all members whose APT certification expires in August or September 2021.  Given the current issues and with the new membership year commencing on September 1, USA Swimming will be providing an extension of this certification until September 30, 2021, for all impacted members. USA Swimming expects the system to be operational by that time and will send all impacted members a follow-up communication when they are again able to renew their APT. Your membership with USA Swimming will not be affected during this interim period.

Opportunity to Hear an Ground Breaking Olympian

  In September, USA Swimming will offer a Zoom presentation featuring Maritza McClendon, 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist and the FIRST African American woman to make a US Olympic swim team.  The USA Swimming LSC Development Committee is sponsoring the presentation on September 21, 2021, at 3:00 PM PDT.  The presentation is open to all interested members, club leaders and those involved in DEI efforts.  Zoom link information is available by contacting the PNS Office.

Short Term Volunteer Consultants to Support PNS Needed

  As clubs around PNS get started after the summer break, most will be conducting registration meetings and reviewing operations with the parents.  Clubs need volunteers to operate successfully and PNS is also dependent on volunteers with expertise to help with advice on various issues.  Please consider asking your club community to help guide the operation of the LSC.  If a member of your club has expertise in any of the following areas and would be willing to assist with the review of PNS, a few hours of their support would be very much appreciated:

            PC computing hardware and associated peripherals;

            Cloud storage;

            Cell phones and cellular service plans;

            Employment agreements;

            Commercial real estate (office properties); and

Document storage and paperless (reduced paper) operation.

  Anyone interested in assisting PNS with any of these questions should contact the General Chair ([email protected]) or the PNS Office ([email protected])

National Committee Meetings Open to All

  Before COVID-19, all the national committees held meetings at the USA Aquatic Sports Convention (see above).  Now, the meetings are virtual and will be conducted during the two weeks prior to the Annual Business Meeting on September 25.  Everyone can register for any of the twelve committee meetings that are planned between September 11 and September 21.  Registration will ensure that you receive the information to connect.  The schedule of meetings and registration is available through the USAS website:

PNS Needs More Officials!

  September starts the new season as clubs register the athletes and new swimmers join teams.  This is a tremendous opportunity for clubs to recruit parents to become officials.  The Officials Committee has created a full schedule of clinics at all levels for the Fall:

https://www.teamunify.com/team/pnws2/page/officials/clinics  .

  In addition, clinicians are willing to arrange a clinic for a specific club if there is sufficient interest.  The COVID pandemic has significantly reduced the numbers of officials so new volunteers are needed.  If your club would like to have someone assist recruiting by talking about the officials and their role on deck – if even for a few minutes at your meetings, please contact John Gagliardo, Officials Committee Chair ([email protected]) or the General Chair ([email protected]) to arrange for an overview.  Coaches and Club Leaders are the best source of referrals to start parents on their “career” as  swim officials.
