MONSOON 4 High School Age

Squad descriptions are intended to serve as an overview to set and explain the different expectations around skills, practice frequencies, typical age ranges, and meet requirements for each squad. The coaches will exercise sound judgment and discretion in placing each athlete to the squad that best suit each swimmer’s level of experience and overall readiness. While there is at times some subjectivity in such decisions, the goal is to enable the swimmer to best enjoy a positive, well-rounded swimming experience so they will develop a love for the sport.

Sept-May (9 Month Programs)

This squad will introduce young athletes to the world of competitive swimming who are 8 & under. It is perfect for swimmers that possess some skills, but not fully able to do all the competitive swimming strokes proficiently. They must be very comfortable in the water and at least 6 years old and show maturity to listen and follow directions in a large group. This squad develops each athlete’s technique through the teaching and application of drills and skills. The goal is to build a strong base for swimming fundamentals upon which future stroke and racing development is enhanced. All competitive strokes will be enhanced in order to prepare our young swimmers for meets. The GREEN Breakers squad prioritizes each athlete’s sense of fun and enjoyment of the sport while nurturing an appreciation to compete in swimming and learn better techniques. Practices last 60 minutes in the water with 20 minutes of dryland. Two practices are offered per week. Mini-Meets are offered every month throughout the season. Swimmers must be able to swim free & back and demonstrate knowledge of breast & fly. A typical age range for GREEN Breakers is 6 to 8 years old but not conditional.
TYPHOON 1 is the next progression in our squad structure and continues to develop the athlete’s fundamental stroke technique while preparing swimmers to race. Must have the ability to successfully demonstrate a legal 25 meter (1 length) of each stroke. It is the ideal starting place for swimmers coming from summer league or advanced swim lessons who are interested in committing to a minimum of two practices per week on a regular basis. In addition to stroke technique, we emphasize skills that develop teamwork, introductory goal setting, basic training etiquette, and good sportsmanship. Practices last 60 minutes in the water with 20 minutes of dryland. Two practices are offered per week. Mini-Meets are offered every month throughout the season. Swimmers must be able to swim all four strokes and have experience with starts and turns. A typical age range for TYPHOON 1 is 7 to 9 years old but not conditional.
TYPHOON 2 is an extension of TYPHOON 1 and is for those younger swimmers who are proficient in all four strokes but still benefit from a smaller coach to swimmer ratio and for those that  are interested in committing to a minimum of three  practices per week on a regular basis. We develop everything that is stated in TYPHOON 1 with the addition of learning how to apply their technique to training and racing with it. Practices last 60 minutes  in the water with 2 0 minutes of dryland . Three practices are offered per week. Mini-Meets are offered every month throughout the season. Sept-Nov & Feb-May (High School Age)

MONSOON

MONSOON serves two types of athletes.  The first is swimmers that have started competitive swimming as a pre-teen or teenager and do not yet have the physical ability or technique to be successful in the Tide squads.  The second is swimmers who enjoy swimming and/or enjoy competing in swim meets, but have many other activities and wish to do swimming along with those other activities.  In addition, these swimmers may not desire or may not be ready for the intensity or expectations of the Tide squads.  This squad is also ideal for swimmers wishing to improve their technique and conditioning before and after HS Swimming.

Practice is offered 4 times per week for 1 hour in the water with 25 minutes of dryland.  This program is offered from Sept-Nov (start of HS swimming) and (after HS swimming) Feb-May. There is no attendance requirement, but swimmers wishing to see consistent improvement should attend practice 3-4 times per week at minimum and swimmers wishing to advance to the Tide squads should strive to make 4 practices per week.  MONSOON swimmers have a wide range of ability, and the focus of this squad is on technique improvement, fitness and conditioning and racing, preparing for HS swimming and/or USA Swimming Competitions.  Many swimmers in this squad may be preparing for the Tide squads, while some may prefer to remain in MONSOON.  Participating in at least 4 USA Swimming competitions is highly encouraged.

Swimmers in this squad are working towards being promoted to BLUE Tide in future seasons.  Swimmers will work on improving their technique in all four strokes, and increasing their strength and endurance through dryland workouts and higher demanding pool workouts.
