Zia received her BFA in photography with a minor in graphic design from George Mason University in May 2019. Growing up in Northern Virginia, Zia began swimming at the age of five. She swam for the Hollin Meadows Swim and Tennis Club and Potomac Marlins. While swimming for Hollin Meadows, Zia was a high point award recipient as well as a Northern Virginia Swimming League All Star participant. She held several records, some of which are still standing: 8&Under 100 IM, 9–10 50 Breast, 9–10 100 IM. Swimming for the Potomac Marlins increased her love and appreciation for the sport, and was the inspiration for her to begin coaching. Coaching has allowed her to pass on her knowledge and love for swimming.

Zia began her coaching career as a developmental coach for Hollin Meadows (NVSL) from 2012–2015. She went on to coach for the Chinquapin Wahoo’s (CSL) as an assistant coach from 2016–2017. Zia began coaching with the Potomac Marlins in 2016.
