Description: Bob was one the first teen-age coaches (15 years old) in northern Virginia. In the late 1960’s, adults (or volunteers) coached their children in baseball, basketball and football. Though Bob swam a lot early in his life, he left swimming for basketball at 13 years old, only to return to swimming as a coach at Starlit Aquatic Club in Fairfax, Virginia, a 50-meter-long course pool and facility, which was one of the first of its kind on the east coast. He left the NVSL for the 1979 season only to return t0 the NVSL, division 1 in 1980 at Overlee Pool in Arlington, Virginia. His teams won Division 1 Championships 6 years in a row when no prior team had ever before gone undefeated and won Division 1 more than 2 years in a row. His Overlee teams also won 6 consecutive Division 1 titles and all-star relay carnival championships from 1980-1985. He retired from the NVSL in 1985 only to return to Overlee in 1988 and win the division 1 title and all-star relay championships again. He returned the following season to Overlee for one final year. In the 8 years he coached Overlee in Division 1, he lost one swim meet and all-star relay carnival championship, his very last in each. Bob has been retired from coaching summer league since 1989. He has however, maintained contact with his beloved NVSL, he has been the announcer for both the NVSL all-star relays and individual all stars for 30+ years. Yes, that’s him in the guard chair, all wired up!!!!!!!!

Hello and welcome to York! We are happy you’re here and are part of/joining the York Swim Club family. Coupled with my years teaching for FCPS, (going on 28), I can say that I am very familiar with the area, the opportunities, challenges, pace of life and everything that comes with being a resident of Northern VA. In that time, I have truly come to believe that York is the most successful at helping our athletes achieve a healthy school (work)/life balance. With athletes at every level of the sport, we work together to challenge and encourage your athlete to achieve on and off the pool deck…so fast swimming, fun and love of the sport and life is what will continue to propel them forward to achieve their goals. Age Groupers – do you want to…. get an A time, make an A meet for you summer club, make finals at a meet, qualify JO’s, qualify for NCSA’s, get a best time, try a new event…we’ve had swimmers do all of that and keep going on the Sr. level…we can get you there too! Let’s go!

I started swimming competitively in the NVSL at Lee Graham when I
was 6 years old. A year later, in 1983, I joined YORK
swim school and the YORK swimming family. I continued
swimming through high school and began coaching swim school during
my junior and senior years.
During summer breaks from
college and the years following graduation, I returned to my summer
team and coached for 6 years at Lee Graham working with all age
groups. After graduation, my path led back to the winter deck
and YORK where I worked with the 12 &unders for 8 years.
During this time I also had the opportunity to coach at Oakton High
School and had 8 great years there.
My personal swim journey began in 1982. Along the way I have
had the chance to work with some amazing coaches, swimmers and
families. I am thrilled that I can continue to share the
magic that is York Swim Club with my kids and family.

Hi all! This will be my 3rd season coaching for York Swim Club and my 13th year being affiliated with the team. Swimming has always been my passion and I look forward to sharing it with your young athletes. Having participated in a variety of different swim programs, I believe York has always done an amazing job providing a place for EVERY level of athlete. York has always been a home for me and I am very happy to extend you all an incredibly warm welcome. GO YORK!!
Coach Doug, here, checking in for what I believe is my 13th (14th?) year of coaching with York! (Full disclosure: I did take about a 13 year hiatus between stints!). I also had a 30 year career coaching Summer League- once upon a time, with the (now-defunct) Lake Barcroft and Ft. Myer teams in the Colonial League, and, much more recently, at Overlee (1995-2000) and Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet (2001-2017).
In my other life, I teach English at Wakefield HS--where I have been since 1993!!
So excited to work with all of our Swimmers- Go York!!!

After graduating from college, I went on to work for a public accounting firm for 4 and a half years before deciding to earn a Master of Education and become a high school math teacher. Along with teaching at Fairfax High School in FCPS, I am the Assistant Head Coach for the Tuckahoe Tigers of the NVSL and am looking forward to coaching with York. I love coaching, I love swimming, and most of all I love seeing the swimmers grow and succeed (and success may look different for every single swimmer in the pool)!

I could not be more excited to start my first season at York. I have been swimming my whole life, with my competitive career starting at age 7 for Carmel Swim Club, located just north of Indianapolis, Indiana. I was a member of Carmel’s Junior National Team and was fortunate enough to swim for Indiana University on scholarship. I hope to be able to share many of the skills I learned during my 15 years as a competitive athlete with my swimmers. Most importantly, I’m looking forward to having fun and sharing my love for the sport!

From Coach Mike:
This will be my 5th year coaching with York, but my swimming career began a LONG time ago on the outskirts of Philly, where I grew up. My competitive swimming career has now spanned 5 decades, beginning when my parents signed me up as an 7-year-old for summer league to shed a few pounds through to the present-day, as I still swim most mornings with a masters team to...shed pounds. In the intervening years, my swimming career took me to the College of William and Mary, where I swam for 4 years and captained the men's varsity team.
My coaching career began back in 1987, when I took the reins of my first summer league team and continued through college. I made the (very smart) decision to not coach my own daughters but, as their swimming careers wound down, I became the head coach at Cardinal Hill in Vienna, where I've spent the last 10 years coaching in the NVSL. All told, I've spent more than 20 years coaching swimmers of all ages and abilities.
After all of this time going up and down the pool, I'm convinced that competitive swimming should be more about having a good time than doing good times. If you enjoy coming to practice because you're having a fun with your friends, you're going to improve and swim faster. So, when I'm coaching on deck, my number one goal is for everyone to have fun! (I also promise to never make the kids do something that I would hate to do when I'm in the water!)
I feel very fortunate to coach at YSC, where the coaches always prioritize the well-being of their swimmers and am excited to, again, coach the great bunch who make up our Oak Marr Night Group (OM4N).
When I'm not on deck or in the water, you can find me teaching at Wakefield High School in Arlington, where I've spent the last 29 years teaching Social Studies.

I've also been an avid Masters Swimmer since 2016, and enjoying traveling around the country for the yearly Masters Nationals meets!

Hello everyone! This season will be my first with York Swim Club.
I had a wonderful childhood growing up in the great state of Pennsylvania. I was raised by the best parents in the world who taught me the value of hard work, courage, kindness and that giving up is never an option! As a youth I swam for my local YMCA competively and then not again until college where I swam for my college team for a year. I decided my second year of college to change direction and I joined the U.S. Navy where I served as an Aviation Electronics In-Flight Technician for 6 years. After the Navy I got married and had four children, which as of this year have all graduated and are officially adults. I was very active in my kids activities which has given me a great deal of experience coaching and working with children. Over the years I was a Girl Scout Leader, Boy Scout Troop Leader, President of the Military Family Readiness Group, Football Assistant Coach, and Cheerleading Head Coach just to name a few.
After moving to Northern Virginia from RI right in the middle of COVID and spending 2 years of looking for a job, I decided last June to take a Lifeguarding Course. Fortunately I passed the course and was hired by Arlington Public Schools to Lifeguard at the YHS Aquatic Center. In the past year I have become a Pool Assistant Manager, I now teach elementary and high schools classes during their swim units and have spent the last year teaching a startup program for APS of swim classes which include all ages of preschool, swim school, stroke school and swim academy.
I never in my wildest dreams saw what I am doing now as this chapter of my life but I believe everything happens for a reason. I feel very fortunate to have been working at YHS while York Swim Club was there and now have the opportunity to work with the organization. I am a firm but fair coach and will work hard and do my best to make sure the athletes get all they can from the program. I will also make sure their experience is fun and safe. I expect my athletes to work hard....always giving 100% effort, listen to the coaches and show us respect and in return, I will do the same. I also believe communication between coaches, parents and athletes is a key to success.
What do I like to do outside of work?.....so many things. The top of my list is anything outdoors....kayaking, camping, hiking, fishing, golfing and so on. I also like bowling, a good movie, putting puzzles together on my tablet, or a book I can lose myself in. I like being active and am always up for something last minute....I am not a planner!
Although I am very new to the swim coaching world I am very excited to get started. I especially can't wait for the swim meets and watching the athletes hard work pay off! I hope everyone has a great season and I look forward to meeting all of you!

From Coach Riley:
Hello York families! My name is Coach Riley and I am thrilled to return to York after competing for the club growing up. I graduated from Langley High School in 2016 where I was captain of the swim team my senior year. After graduating I went down to Williamsburg to attend William & Mary where I graduated in 2020 with a degree in government. While in college I coached for a local USA swimming team where I worked primarly with age group athletes. Currently, I'm an 8th grade civics teacher at Twain Middle School.
When I graduated from William and Mary and moved back to the area, I knew I wanted to continue coaching, but was not sure which club to coach for. Ultimatley, I chose York because I know from experience that the coaches on York always put the well-being of their atheltes above all else. I am excited to continue to contribute to a culture where coaches are encouraged to support athletes both in and out of the pool.
When I'm not on deck or in the classroom, you can find me either winning a game of Catan, struggling through a crossword puzzle, or trying to stay physically active through a variety of activites. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to shoot me an email!

From Coach Alex
I am excited to be back coaching for York for a second season. Growing up swimming in Northen Virginia I am well aware of the different bennifits that swimming competitively has on both the growth of a young swimmer but also a young athlete and person. As a coach my goal is to push every swimmer to get better but also teach them lessons they can take with them beyond the pool deck. I currently work for the kidney trasnsplant program at Georgetown Univeristy Hospital with pre kideny trasnplant patients but my favortie job is coaching young athletes. I look forward to sharing my love for swimming!

Message from Lauren:
Hi everyone! My name is Lauren Simonson, and I am so excited to be coaching for the amazing York Swim Club! I grew up swimming at Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet (NVSL) from 2005-2018, AAC 2008-2011and York 2013-2018. I was the captain of Bishop O'Connell high school’s swim team and a 4-year varsity letter holder where I went to compete at states all 4 years. After high school, I attended the Randolph Macon College where I competed on the varsity swim team all 4 years where I swam spring and mid distance freestyle.
My favorite thing about coaching is sharing my love for swimming with all the kids and pushing then to be the best swimmers they can be! I can’t wait to meet everyone this season.

From Coach Patrick
Hi everyone, this will be my 6th year coaching with York Swim Club! I grew up in Northern Virginia while attended Bishop O'Connell High School and James Madison Universtiy(Roll Dukes!). I grew up around swimming and started swimming from a young age, but focused on other sports as I got older. When I finished at JMU and came home, I got back into coaching swimming with my father, Bob York. It has reignited my passion for it and I couldn't imagine not having my groups today. York Swim Club truly imbodies the family atmosphere while staying competitive and encouraging these kids to grow as individuals and as a group. Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have for me about York or the upcoming season!
