Las Trampas Swim Clinic: Session 3

POPportunity Swims

Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings are opportunities for clinic participants to swim for official times and earn POPs.   What were previously called Mini-Meets are now referred to as "Popportunity Swims"  on the calendar.  These are additional swim sessions for each practice group, and allow parents the opportunity to watch their children swim.

Each swimmer may be onsite for the duration of his/her POPportunity Swim only.  Upon completion of their events, swimmers should depart from Las Trampas.

1 parent per family may accompany the participating swimmer(s) as a spectator.  Only 1 parent per participating family will be allowed on deck.

Please keep in mind that these plans may need further modification in the coming weeks.  We appreciate your patience and flexibility.

POPportunity Swims will be held on the following dates:

  • Wednesday evenings: July 15th, July 22nd, July 29th, August 5th
  • Saturday mornings: July 18th, July 25th, August 1st, August 8th

  • Commitment deadline for Wednesday meets is Saturday at 11:59 PM.  There will be no Individual Medley offered on Wednesdays.

  • Swimmers choose 3 strokes. Please note your stroke selections when committing to the meet.
  • Commitment deadline for Saturday meets is Wednesday at 11:59 PM.  Individual Medley is offered on Saturdays only.

Masks are required for all, ages 2+.  Swimmers may remove their masks immediately before their races and must replace masks immediately following races.  No one is allowed on deck without a mask. Parents must wear masks at all times.

Please bring your own chairs.  No pop-up tents allowed.  We appreciate you packing light for these short meets, to allow efficient entry to and exit from the property.

Those who are not feeling well, or who have experienced fever, shortness of breath, and other symptoms of illness should stay home.  This applies to swimmers, parents, coaches and lifeguards alike.

Timeliness is essential to POPportunity success.  In order to prevent excess cross-traffic, please do not arrive earlier than the BREAK time as listed in the Schedule below.  Once your swimmer has completed all swims, please depart from the property.

Our facility capacity is 49 people.  This number is calculated based on the square footage of the pool itself, but applies to the total number of people allowed through the gates at LT.  In order to comply with Contra Costa Health Department guidelines for outdoor swimming pools, we may not exceed 49 people within the pool gates at any time.  Please understand that all of the policies we have outlined below are designed to ensure that we can safely respect the 49-person capacity restriction.

Non-participating siblings may NOT attend meets.  This policy applies to both siblings who are in other Groups, and siblings who are not in the program at all.  If extenuating circumstances make it impossible to leave a non-participating sibling at home, please email the Directors at [email protected].  We will consider the number of group-specific committed athletes + their parents + the desk workers, deck officials, and coaches whose attendance is required.  We will determine whether or not we can accommodate additional siblings in the headcount on property.  Please note that without prior permission, non-participating siblings will not be allowed through the gates during a Mini-Meet.

You may park cars in the Las Trampas parking lot.

If you are a Star Job holder with an active role during your child’s POPportunity Swim, a second parent may be on deck as a spectator.  This pertains to Deck and Desk officials only.

Tentative Schedule: Eeach POPportunity's schedule will be slightly different, based number of committed swimmers, the total number of heats being raced, and transition time between the age groups. Please look out for the specific timeline of each POPportunity when the meet programs are sent out by the Desk Team.

POPportunity Flow

  • Swimmer + 1 parent will enter the pool deck and place chair/personal belongings at least 6 feet away from other swimmers and parents.  Entry will be through the side gate closest to Snack Shack.  Reminders: No siblings, masks required.
  • After swimmers warm up, the on-deck Announcer will communicate upcoming heats.
  • Parent will be responsible for walking his/her swimmer to the correct heat/lane.  Coaches will greet the swimmers near the starting blocks.  There will be no Shepherds working.
  • After escorting swimmers to the appropriate lanes, Parents will proceed to the west end of the pool to watch from the Parent Spectator area. Cones will be placed 6 feet apart to designate viewing locations.

At Awards Night (August 22 to be held either virtually or in person...tbd), every swimmer participating in the Swim Clinic who has achieved 7 or more Pops will receive an embroidered pop time towel.

A pop time is a new personal best time in individual events during the 5 week swim clinic.  Results from the first timed swims of camp/clinic will be the starting point for calculating "pops."  There will not be an official Time Trials meet.

The pop time board at the pool is for everyone's motivation and enjoyment, but is unofficial and may occasionally contain errors.  If there is a mistake on the pop time board, the Pop database online will be definitive, not the results on the pop time board.
