Anoka Swim and Dive

Who can join the team?

  • If you are in grades 7-12, you are eligible to join the team, no matter your experience level! We do not have tryouts and we do not cut athletes.

Do I need to know how to swim/dive?

  • In short, no! We ask that you can at least swim 25 yards (one length of the pool), but no competitive experience is necessary!

How long is the season?

  • The girls season is a fall sport, so it begins mid-August. JV Champs (where many new athletes will compete) is usually the last weekend in October, and that concludes the JV season. Sections (which is only about 20 athletes) is mid-November, and the MSHSL state swim/dive meet is usually the weekend before Thanksgiving.
  • The boys season is a winter sport, so it begins late November (usually the Monday after Thanksgiving). JV Champs (where many new athletes will compete) is usually mid-February, and that concludes the JV season. Sections (which is only about 20 athletes) is at the end of February, and the MSHSL state swim/dive meet is usually the first weekend of March.

I see there are morning practices…

  • Morning practices are recommended for our varsity-level swimmers, but they are not required for anyone. However, if you are going to miss a practice during the week, you might be strongly encouraged to attend morning practice to make up for that missed practice.

Transportation options?

  • We have district transportation for all away meets, but your athlete will be responsible for getting themselves to and from all practices and home meets. If you have a 7th or 8th grader, they will just walk down to the pool after school! If you have a high schooler who does not drive, please talk to the captains about carpool arrangements.
  • There is also an activity bus that runs from the high school to the middle school that students can utilize.

How will information be communicated to me?

  • Communication regarding practices, meets, and everything in between will be communicated through one or more of the following methods:
    • 1. Website - Please check the Anoka Swim & Dive website frequently! We do our best to keep this up-to-date with practice times, bus times, meet times, etc.
    • 2. Email - Watch your email for weekly updates from the coaches. Those emails always include important information you and your athletes should know about!
    • 3. Remind texts - Captains will send out the information to get on our text Remind chain. We primarily use this for reminders.
    • 4. Your athlete - Please check with your athlete. As student-athletes we are always trying to help them develop into successful young people, and this includes placing some responsibility on them to know what is going on.

How do I register for the Anoka Swim and Dive Team?

  • Girls’ registration begins in early August every year, as it is a part of the fall sports season. Boys’ registration begins in November, as it is part of the winter sports season.
  • Middle school students who have never registered for a high school sport before will have to provide a physical to the high school. The middle school and the high school do not share that information.
  • There are two parts of our registration process: registering with the high school and registering with our booster club. Please see the Anoka Swim & Dive website and handbook for more information about registration.

What is the cost?

  • $280.00 for Anoka High School sports registration. Please see the “Typical Expenses” tab for more information.

What’s in it for me?

  • We do not cut and do not hold tryouts. Everyone gets to compete - there’s no riding the bench in swimming. Additionally, from day one you will have opportunities to earn a high school varsity letter and be a member of the varsity team. We want you to be a part of our team and share in the FUN we have!

Ok, I’m in! What do I do now?

  • Great! We’re excited to have you on our team! Email the co-head coaches Nicole Hedman at [email protected] and Mackenzie Menden at [email protected] and we will reach out to you and keep you informed of when you can register at the high school. We look forward to seeing you at the pool!!

Any other questions, please check out the handbook! It includes everything from contact info to expectations/policies to helpful meet information!
