Margaret Soulen Gilbert

Since 2009, the Walton Swim & Dive program has hosted the Annual Margaret Gilbert Memorial Invite Meet held every December at the Cobb Aquatic Center on Fairground Road in Marietta, GA.  This meet is dear to the hearts of our coach, Sharon Loughran, our team and to all who have been touched in some way or another by the horrible disease of cancer.

This meet is a cancer awareness fundraiser, in memory of Margaret Soulen Gilbert, who passed away after fighting breast cancer for two years.

Margaret was an accomplished athlete both as a swimmer and after college as a runner.  She started her swim career swimming for North Springs High School in Fulton County, she went on to the Olympic trials and had a full scholarship at Virginia Tech, where she became an All-American swimmer while obtaining her Industrial Engineering Degree.  As a freshmen at VA Tech, Margaret set four school records and qualified for Senior Nationals in the 200 backstroke.  As a sophomore, she held five individual school records and was part of three record-setting relay teams. Margaret once again made Senior Nationals for the second time.  She went to the NCAA Championships her junior year where she qualified for the Olympic Trials to compete in the 200 backstroke. During her senior year, Margaret was the first Tech woman swimmer to score points in the NCAA Championships.  Margaret finished her college swimming career being ranked “as one of Tech’s top four performers in five different individual events” according  In 2001 Margaret was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

Coach Loughran met Margaret while swimming and competing for the Virginia Tech Swim and Dive Team. Coach Loughran wanted to honor her former college teammate and friend, while raising breast cancer awareness, by dedicating the Annual Margaret Gilbert Memorial Meet in her memory.

Each year, the participating high school teams compete in the water and on the diving board and in a friendly-worthy fundraising competition. The meet has a festive air about it and many athletes wear a pink cap in honor of the fight against breast cancer. Each team collects loose change and donations and puts them in team-specific donation buckets as the athletes and team supporters arrive at the meet. The high school that raises the most money for this cause is awarded a small trophy.  ALL proceeds raised by this event sponsor Margaret's four daughters and three sisters to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day fundraiser to fight breast cancer.

Please be sure to come and support a worthy cause and see your local high school athletes competing at an awesome level of athleticism.  Your support is truly appreciated by all who have been affected by this horrible disease.  This meet is held each December.  We hope to see you there!
