Somerset Dolphins Narrowly Miss 1st Season Win vs. Lakelands Lionfish But Post Fast Times (And a New Team Record) in First A Meet!

The Somerset Dolphins swam their first A meet of the 2022 season in a tougher Division (I), traveling up I-270 to face off against the Lakeland Lionfish. The Lionfish narrowly outswam the Dolphins, winning a close contest by only 9 points, 389 to 380.

As always, the Dolphins swam their hearts out, posting points, best times, and impressive time drops across all age groups. Three swimmers did incredible jobs swimming up this meet to fill out the roster for 13/14 boys:: Alex Veskler (9!), Warner Hurst (11), and Elias Roark (12). Elias even came in third in boys 13/14 backstroke and fourth in 13/14 fly, scoring critical points for the team in both events. A long-held team record fell, with Everett Mascott besting Adam Bookman’s 1998 11/12 Breast record with a blistering time of 38.51.

Other highlights from the meet across age groups:

  • 8 & Under Boys – Beck Fuentes-Darling won all the individual events he swam in – Free, Breast, and Fly. Ben Fowlkes, Saul Kaplan, and Carter Bannister each achieved top three finishes. Sebastian Riley, only 6, scored points for the team in Free. Kevan Helm and Max Guiley rounded out what is proving to be a strong group of contributors to the team this season!
  • 8 & Under Girls –Esti Fox, Giana Rosenthal and Sabrina Bryce racked up crucial points for the team and Seren Bannister, Claire Rovak, Celine Lawler and Everly Carrier rounded out a strong group of younger up and coming Dolphin swimmers.
  • 9/10 Boys – Eli Mascott took first place in all three of his individual events (Free, Breast, Fly). Gabriel Regan, Cam Edick, Henry Borden, Bijan Helm and Auggie Mascott all produced solid performances.
  • 9/10 Girls – Clara Reilly won the Back, Breast and Fly. Indu Kumar won the Free. Chloe Rosenthal, Joy Turner, Anna Tye and contributed in ways large and small toward the effort this morning.
  • 11/12 Boys – In addition to breaking the team record, Everett Mascott won all of his individual events (IM, Free, Breast, Fly). Liam Bryce won the Back and he and Dylan Reilly had many top three finishes. Xan Guyer and Zack Fox also swam valiantly in today’s meet.
  • 11/12 Girls – Junie Zaft, Luna Fuentes-Darling, Scarlett Doherty, Ellie Hyman fought hard for points and all swam blistering fast times on behalf of the Dolphins.
  • 13/14 Boys – Gage Bolten won three events today (IM, Back, Fly) Alex Veskler, Warner Hurst and Elias Roark all swam up and earned valuable points for the team.
  • 13/14 Girls – Avery Mascott won three events (IM, Breast, Fly). Phoebe Lewis racked up valuable points by finishing the top three in all four of her individual events. Jess Williams, Lola Fuentes- Darling, Eliza Fox, Julia Meddin and Aubrey Green also turned in strong performances.
  • 15-18 Boys – Miles Haraldsson won all four of his individual events (IM, Back, Breast, Fly) Peter Kumar, Cillian Doherty, David Panner, Ronan Doherty and Sam Meddin swam best times today.
  • 15-18 Girls – Delia Vanderzon won Back and Fly in her age group. Joey Panner, Nini Panner, Olivia Zaft, Elana Bilbao swam the lights out today.

Many Somerset swimmers also achieved All-Star times: Gage Bolten (IM, Back, Fly), Beck Fuentes- Darling (Breast), Miles Haraldsson (IM, Back, Breast, Fly), Avery Mascott (IM, Back, Fly), Eli Mascott (Breast), Everett Mascott (IM, Free, Breast, Fly), Clara Reilly (Back), Dylan Reilly (Breast), Delia Vanderzon (Fly).

New Dolphins Head Coach Roger Dent recognized two swimmers of the meet: Indu Kumar and Warner Hurst. Both of which swam lights out and showed great sportsmanship after races.

Somerset’s next meet is Saturday June 18 th at HOME against the Westleigh Barracudas.
