At every group level we cater to a wide range of swimming abilty and experience including everything from those who just want a fun summer activity with their friends, to those who swim competetively year round and wish to further their skills. It is the goal of the Firebrook Swim Team to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual to meet THEIR goals and develope each athlete to the best of THEIR abilities in a fun, team-focused atmosphere.

For questions regarding which group is right for your child please e-mail us at [email protected]

Jr. Firefish

This is our entry level group for children age 3-5. Children do not need to be able to swim to enter this group. Jr. Firefish will work in small groups with our FBST Firefish coaches on such things as putting their face in the water, blowing bubbles, front and back float, using big arms, kicking and jumping-in. Because this group will include a range of swimming ability, our Coaches will do their best try to asses your child's ability and comfort level and encourage them to develope more water independence in a fun and safe way. However, this group is meant to be very introductory and coaches will not work on stroke mechanics or stroke development.

The Jr. Firefish do not compete in meets but are encouraged to participate in all other spirit and team activities. Jr. Firefish may be invited to compete if they progress to swimming the length of the pool unassisted before the end of the season. Parents of Junior Firefish will be asked to commit to one swim meet volunteer session.

We ask that a parent, guardian or responsible adult be on-deck with your child during Jr. Firefish practice.

Practice Days/Times: M/T/F 11:10 am to 11:50 am

Firebrook Swim Competition Team, "The Firefish"

For swimmers 4-18 who can swim some distance unassisted. In order to participate in weekly swim meets all althletes must be able to swim one length of the pool (25 meters) unassisted by the wall, coach or lane line. However, a full 25 meters is not required to join the team and train. If your child is not able to swim a full 25 yet, but is over the age of 5 and can swim 5-10 yards unassisted, this is probably the right group for them.

Our practice groups are divided by age, not ability. Swimmers of all ability and experience are welcome. Upon assesment by our coaching staff, participants will be assigned to lanes that suit their ability level and best help them develop their skills. For our newer swimmers who may not be ready for full competition yet, our coaches will continue to assess and communicate with you about when/if your child is ready to compete at our meets.

6 and Unders:

Athletes in this group focus primarily on freestyle and backstroke. They will work on the mechanics of rotary breathing and becoming legal in backstroke.  As swimmers progress through the season coaches may begin to teach the basics of the other two advanced strokes; breaststroke and butterfly. Meets are completely voluntary but we encourage all of our swimmers to try once they are ready. All events are 25 meters in length.

Practice Days/Times: M/T/Th/F 11:00-11:50

10 and Unders

Athletes in this group are 7-10 years old and have a wide range of swimming ability and experience. This group will work on everything from basic stroke mechanics in all four strokes to fine tuning strokes and starts to increase speed and endurance, depending on the needs and ability of the athlete. All events, with the exception of the 100 IM, are 25 meters.

Practice Days/Times: M/T/W/Th/F 9:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

11 and Over

Minimum age for entry into this group is 11 years old. This group includes athletes with a wide range of ability and experience; from those who swim for excercise and bonding with their neighborhood friends to those who swim competetively year-round. This age group does focus more on endurance and performance rather than stroke mechanics, so a basic level of competence in all four strokes is assumed. Events at this age level range from 50 to 200 Meters so flip-turns are utilized, but will be taught to those who are new to this level of swimming.

Practice Days/Times: M/T/W/Th/F: 8:45 am - 10:00 am

Stroke and Turn Clinic:

Stroke and turn clinics are available to all FBST Firefish. Clinics allow swimmers to work on strokes they may be struggling with in a smaller group setting with more individualized instruction. Clinics are held M/T/Th/F after practice from 12-12:30.  Each day will be dedicated to one particular stroke. The cost is $5 per clinic to be paid to the coach running the clinic that day
