Practices and Meets

Afternoon Practices begin on Tuesday, May 29th.  Morning practices begin on Friday, June 14th.

Get your Patch Test ASAP.  Just see a lifeguard on deck during the regular swim break to take it. Swimmers 12 and under must pass the patch test every year and must have their patch before joining practice.

“A” meets begin at 9:00 am on Saturdays and “B” meets begin at 6:00pm on Mondays.

(Check the team website for the listing of the meets.)

**Parents for kids 9 and under have to be on deck during practices.**  This is a pool rule and is very important for safety.  If you cannot stay with your child at practice make sure there is another adult or babysitter who is 14 years or older.  One adult may be responsible no more than 5 children under the age of 12.  Pool regulations stipulate that when leaving children with a babysitter at the pool they must leave a note with the front desk that includes:

-Date(s) of pool use
-Name of sitter
-Names of member's and babysitter's children
-Emergency telephone number.

Have to miss a meet?

PLEASE notify us as soon as possible if you are NOT able to make a meet.  You can go to the team website and click on the meet and click on the Attend button.  That will give you the option to not attend.

Team Handbook

Introduction:The Dunn Loring Swim Team is a member of the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL), the largest age-group swim league in the country. NVSL was formed to develop "a love for the sport, advanced aquatic skills, teamwork, and principles of good sportsmanship".  NVSL has 102 teams divided into 17 divisions. This year we are in Division 6.

Dunn Loring Team Goals:

Improve swimmers' skills

Develop good sportsmanship

Encourage and develop teamwork

Enable swimmers to feel good about themselves

Have fun while developing a love for swimming

We are one team - not an A team or B team. You are invited to attend ALL meets, parties, and activities that work for your family.

Requirements to be on the team:

We have online swimming registration.  To register your children to be on the team, just go to the Dunn Loring Swim Club website (www.dlsc.net) and click on the Swim Team link.  You will see the button that will take you to the Swim Team Website and Registration page.  If you have any questions or problems, please contact the Team Reps at swimteamdunnloring@gmail.com.

Volunteer Requirement:

In order to register your child, your family will be required to volunteer for at least 5 volunteer "hours" during the swim season.  There are slots for all types of time commitments.  Even dropping off food for the A meet concession stand counts even though it takes so little time.  Be sure to sign up on the Swim Team Website.  All the volunteer position descriptions and instructions on how to volunteer will be on this site.  If you worry about how finding a job that will fit your time availability, contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Melissa Paine.

Patch Test

To be on the swim team, a child must pass the Dunn Loring Swim Club patch test. In order to pass the Patch test, the child must be able to swim the full length of the pool with a reasonably solid front crawl, tread water for one minute and float on their back for 30 seconds.

It is the parents' responsibility to have the swimmer tested by a lifeguard at the swim club. The tests are usually given during the swim breaks at the regular public pool open swim sessions.  Swimmers who have not received their patch may sign up for the team but may not practice with the team until patch test has been passed.

Parent/Guardian Present for 9 and under

The Dunn Loring Swim Club rules state that children age 9 and under must be accompanied by an adult while at the pool.  This rule also applies to Swim Team practices.

The coaches must devote their time and attention to the safety of the swimmers in the water and cannot be responsible for children on deck or in the restrooms.  It is important that we are able to find the responsible adult in case of an emergency.

Registration Fee:

$125.00 per swimmer ($175.00 combination for both swim and dive teams)

Each swimmer receives a T-shirt and swim cap free with their registration.  Also covered are weekly doughnuts, some team spirit activities, awards, trophies, meet supplies, insurance, etc.

2019 Coaches:

Dolphins Head Coach: TBD

Dolphins Coaches: TBD

Mini-Dolphin Coaches: TBD

Check the Swim Team Website!

To be informed of upcoming events - parents and swimmers should check their email (DAILY!), the swim team bulletin board, the swim team website (where you registered) and family folders in the team boxes.

Family Folders cab be found under the Bulletin Boards - these contain your swimmers' ribbons and picture order forms so it is important to check it on a regular basis.

We have also started a Facebook group for the team as another forum to share information, share photos, meet other families on the team, etc.  Request an invitation to the group:

Friday Morning practice is very IMPORTANT!!  That is where we announce the swimmers for Saturday’s A meets (AND we hand out doughnuts!)  Please try to be there!

Private Lessons:

Private lessons are available from all coaches and lifeguards. Contact the individual for cost and times.

Meet Types and Details:

The Dunn Loring Dolphins have always tried hard to keep all swimmers united under one team despite who swims for A Meets and B Meets.  Every swimmer is important and part of our team and ANY swimmer can make the A meets if their swimming time puts them there.  Our focus is truly NOT based on winning at all costs – it is having fun while swimming.

"A" Meets:

“A” Meets are scored dual meets on Saturday mornings. We swim all the teams in our Division, both individual and relay events.

During Friday morning practices, the coaches will announce the swimmers for the Saturday meet.  It is very important that everyone comes to those Friday practices.

It is also very important that you mark your child's availability for each A meet.

Winning Points for the Team:

Individual 1st place -5 points

2nd place -3 points

3rd place -1 point

Relays 1st place -5 points

All "A" meets start promptly at 9:00 AM. For away meets, we will caravan from our pool. See the Bulletin Board for departure times. For home meets, be at our pool at 8:00 am for warm-ups.

"B" Meets:

"B" meets generally start at 6:00 PM. For home meets, be at our pool at 5:30 pm for warm-ups.

Please sign up for strokes for B meets by Saturday before the Monday meet.  Once again, substitutions are very hard at the last minute.

Swim Meet Rules (A meets):  A swimmer may swim in no more than 2 individual events, plus 1 regular relay and 1 mixed age relay. We enter 3 swimmers in each individual event. Competition is grouped by age (8 & under, 9-10,11-12, 13-14, and 15-18) and gender. The swimmer's age on June 1, 2017 determines age group. A swimmer can "swim up", i.e. swim in an older group (a 12 year old may compete in a 13-14 event).

"B" Meets: Unscored developmental meets on Monday evenings with Vienna teams. There are two 6 and under events and optional relays. Each swimmer may enter two individual events. With multiple heats, every child swims two strokes of their choosing (following "B meet rules" - see below). These meets are very much fun for the swimmers and low in stress/competition.

They are great builders of self esteem and moral. We encourage all of our swimmers who are eligible to participate. We would like to see all of our team members attend even if they are not swimming in the meet.

"B" Meet Eligibility Rules:

If a swimmer placed 1st or 2nd in any individual event in an "A" meet on the previous Saturday (or the most recent A meet the swimmer was in), he or she may swim one event on Monday's B meet as an "unofficial" swimmer (i.e. not eligible for a place ribbon).  The stroke cannot be the same stroke he/she placed 1st or 2nd in in the A meet.  A swimmer who has won a 3rd place ribbon in an "A" meet on the previous Saturday may not swim that stroke in the Monday "B" meet but may still swim two strokes. The team rep has the final decision as to which swimmers are or are not eligible to swim in any "B" meet.

Other Meets:

Divisional Relay Carnival: A scored relay meet among the teams in Division 4 on Wednesday evening mid-season. Children may swim in no more than 2 events but must qualify for this special meet.
