Viperfish Swim Coach Job Description
General Expectations:
1. CPR and Life Guard Certificate is required to be obtained prior to Memorial Day Weekend.
2. Register at Old Dominion Swim League website, www.swimodsl.com
3. Conduct self with the utmost professionalism
a. Ethical and courteous conduct
b. Seeks help and accepts suggestions from Head Coach and Team Board
c. Dress in appropriate attire
d. Personal Contact: Touches swimmers only in “The Zone”; hands (high fives) tops of shoulders, upper half
of back, top of head. Hugs are acceptable.
e. Willingness for continued education in the profession
f. Treats parents with courtesy and respect
g. To immediately refer all disputes, arguments, complaints or requests for special privileges from parents,
to the Head Coach and the Viperfish Board of Directors, as appropriate.
4. Encourage team spirit
5. Foster the principles of good sportsmanship.
6. Absences
a. If an emergency arises that results in a missed practice, the head coach must be notified, within 4 hours
of scheduled time.
b. To be present at all swim team functions and activities (unless excused by the Head Coach, in advance)
and to supervise the conduct of the team members at all functions and activities. Serve as a positive role
model, and mentor, for all swimmers
Practice Expectations:
1. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to practice
2. Cell phones are not on deck.
3. Please have a swim suit on and be ready to be in the water during practice. (i.e.: goggles and cap if needed)
4. Review written practice and discuss prior to practice starting.
5. Prepare CIT’s to assist and review plan.
6. While practice is running:
a. Ensuring swimmer safety at all times
b. Engaging swimmers
c. Positive encouragement and high fives
d. Correct technique when needed
7. Guide all questions to team representatives and/or head coach.
a. There will be time to discuss swimmer information before or after practice.
8. Assist with cleanup of the pool.
Home Meet Expectations:
1. Please arrive at 6:45a/4:45p
2. Please have a swim suit on in case we need to swim with the younger swimmers.
3. Review Coaching Assignments work with fellow coaches to get meet ready.
4. All coaches on pool deck by 7:00a/5:00p and in themed outfits
a. Engaging swimmers
b. Make sure all swimmers and parents understand what is going on
5. 7:05a/5:05p Please get swimmers ready from their 7:10a/5:10p warm up
6. Stay at assigned lanes or duty during warm-up
7. All coaches to report to the team area at 7:30a/5:30p to join the team.
8. 7:55a/5:55p National anthem
9. 8:00a/6:00p Events start
10. Stay with assignment during the meet
a. Assist with clerk of course
b. CIT will be assisting
11. Encourage swimmers to stay until end and cheer
12. Clean up and team cheer
Away Meet Expectations:
1. Please arrive at the away pool at 6:45a/4:45p
2. Please have a swim suit on in case we need to swim with the younger swimmers.
3. Review Coaching Assignments work with fellow coaches to get meet ready.
4. All coaches on team area by 7:00a/5:00p and polos
a. Engaging swimmers
b. Make sure all swimmers and parents understand what is going on
5. 7:25a/5:25p Please get swimmers ready from their 7:35a/5:35p warm up
6. Stay at assigned lanes or duty during warm-up
7. All coaches to report to the team area at 7:55a/5:55p to join the team.
8. Stay with assignment during the meet
a. Assist with clerk of course
b. CIT will be assisting
9. Encourage swimmers to stay until end and cheer
10. Clean up and team cheer
