STINGRAY NEWS - Intrasquad, Spirit Week, and OMPA

Great Swimming in July!  Our Stingrays have shown up this month! At Meadow Mini Meet, Sleepy B, our various dual meets, swimmers have been tagging on many new gold, silver, and bronze times and generally showing up for meets with great spirit and sportsmanship. Let’s keep it going into August and OMPA!

Coach Appreciation Week:  July is busy for all but no one is working harder than our fantastic coaching staff -- they are on duty 7 days a week this month and are doing an outstanding job. This week is our "Coach Appreciation" week.

There will be a place to drop off notes and gift cards in the coaches office all week. These gift cards are distributed by Brad among ALL the coaches and you know we have a lot! So bring all your Stingray spirit. Amazon, Starbucks, Peets, Jamba Juice, and In-N-Out are just a few of the perennial favorites. Your generosity means so much to our hardworking staff -- be sure to show them you care!

Please drop off cards, notes, gift cards, etc. in the box next to the coaches office. Brad will take care of distribution, so don't worry about addressing. Thanks to all who have volunteered to help cater some lunches and snacks!

Intrasquad:  Wednesday’s Last Chance intrasquad meet is one of our favorites of the year with swimmers split into Red, White and Blue teams. Remember the unorthodox order:  Ministinger freestyle (as well as the other age group’s freestyle) followed by Fly, Back, Breast, Free and IM. Swim fast Park!

Practice Schedules: This week is the last full week of the year and has earned its reputation as “hard week” by asking swimmers to push themselves even harder to get strong ahead of OMPA.  Afternoon supplemental practices end THIS week on July 26.

Next week we head into “taper week” where we will have regular morning practices through Wednesday, July 31. There are no changes to the daily practice schedule, however, we may be getting out of practice a bit early each day to promote and preserve our taper. Monday’s 6&U practice will get out at 1PM to accommodate the movie day.

We’ve asked a lot of everyone this year. Thank you everyone for all your help and hard work. Now because we got started on our annual auction a little late, we had fewer donations to offer than we’d hoped. So in lieu of an online auction, we’ll be hosting a raffle at Wednesday’s Intrasquad meet instead. We’ll be raffling off OMPA parking spots (worth their weight in gold) and a guaranteed spot in Kids Camp next year-a full summer entirely free. If you remember, we promised a portion of the auction to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP). It’s not enough. Instead we’re donating ALL proceeds to the AFSP. Raffle tickets will be sold at a designated table at the meet by cash or charge. For questions, email Leslie Millstone (

OMPA Sign-in and Event Requests this Week: Thank you everyone for signing into the OMPA meet and signing up for volunteer obligations! Swimmers can make their OMPA requests on the whiteboard through Thursday’s practices. Requests will be honored in most cases but remember, the coaches have the final say on what you swim.

Getting Fit for OMPA:  As we head into the last weeks of the season, our focus turns to getting in maximum shape for OMPA. Along with hard effort at practices this week, eating healthfully over the next couple of weeks can also enhance swimmer’s performance.  Take a look at these great nutrition suggestions from parent Amy Smith, Certified Natural Chef, and try out some of her recipes with your swimmer!

OMPA Quick Tips: Trying to remember the blur that was OMPA?  First time and wondering what it’s all about?  Check out our quick tips to OMPA.  You’ll be receiving many more details next week!

Last Thursday morning lots of kids came out and dedicated their swim workout to Propel a Cure! After working up an appetite they enjoyed bagels and cream cheese and were able to see the prizes on display. Thank you all for your terrific support in our fight against Crohn’s disease.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO DONATE! Next Wednesday, July 24th we will be at the swim meet and for those of you who would still like to participate, we will be collecting the pledge forms and donations. Coaches have a list of how many laps were swum by each practice in the coaches office. Drop your donations off (forms are found next to the ribbon boxes) with the coaches before Wednesday’s Intrasquad Meet as there will be first and second prizes for each age group for the swimmers as well as one winner who brings in the most across all groups.

We will also have the raffle drawings at that time. We have three gift cards we are raffling: $100 from Decathlon in Emeryville, $50 for the 4th Bore restaurant in Theater Square, and $25 from Rite-Aid.

Please remember, 100% of your donations go to research! Come by the table and find out about the very promising project we are supporting and see the prizes.

Once again thank you to all swimmers, big and small! I can assure you the Crohn’s community is deeply touched by your efforts!
