Prince William Swim League (PWSL)
Dual Meet Scoring

PWSL dual meets are comprised of 67 events: 19 relays and 48 individual events.  Swimmers compete in one of the following age groups: 8 & Under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18, as determined by their age as of June 1.  Each swimmer may compete in three individual events and two relays.  Swimmers earn points for their teams by competing in relay events and by being one of the six fastest finishers on their team in individual events.  The team with the most points wins the meet.

Relay Event Scoring
First place in relay events is won by the fastest legal swim; the opponent takes 2nd Place automatically as long as they are not disqualified (DQ).  Therefore, the same team cannot score points for both First and Second Places.  Ribbons are awarded to each relay swimmer in the first, second, and third legal swims based on time.  The same team can receive ribbons for first, second, and third place finishes.

Individual Event Scoring
Swimmers can earn individual points in Free, IM, Back, Breast, and Fly events.  Individual points are assigned for up to 12 places, but a team can only have 6 swimmers score in any single event.  In other words, only the top six finishers on each team are eligible to score points.  The points for these top 6 swimmers on each team are awarded as shown based on finish time.  Ribbons are awarded to the top 12 legal finishes, regardless of team, based on time.  Ribbons are also awarded for the top twelve  6 year olds (or younger) in Free and Back events based on time.

PWSL Summer Time Standards

What Does PWA or PWB Mean?
You may notice the PWA or PWB letter code next to your swimmer's results. These codes represent the time standard your swimmer has achieved in his or her event. The Prince William Swim League has developed these standards to help gauge your swimmer's development in comparison to other swimmers in the league. These standards are reviewed annually but have remained stable over the last few years. An "A" time is one that falls in the range that would be achieved by the fastest 20% of swimmers. A "B" time is in the range that has been achieved by the next fastest 40%, and a "C" time by the remaining 40%. Occasionally a swimmer will notice a plus or minus sign next to this letter code. A "B+" is not faster than a "B." The plus sign indicates that your swimmer has advanced from a "C" time to a "B." Similarly, a "B-" indicates that the swimmer has previously recorded an "A" time. Each event has its own time standards, reflecting the difficulty of the stroke, the age of the swimmer, and whether the event is for boys or girls.
