Lake Ridge Water Polo Frequently Asked Questions
What is Water Polo?
Water Polo is a team water sport in which players attempt to advance a ball, by swimming, passing, and shooting, into a goal floating above the water’s surface. Similar to basketball, each team is comprised of players responsible for both offensive and defensive play. In addition to field players, each team also includes a goalie.

How old do you have to be to play water polo?
Lake Ridge Water Polo offers programs for multiple age groups! Our youngest is a 10U (ages 10 and under) program, which accepts participants as young as age 7 (with consideration given to strong 6-year-old swimmers, at the coaching staff’s discretion). Our oldest is an 18+ (ages 18 and older) program, which accepts all participants over the age of 18. Whatever age an athlete is, as of 06/01/2015 determines which group they should train with.
What program do I sign up for?
We currently offer four programs: 10U, 14U, 18U, and 18+. Programs 10U, 14U, and 18U are weekly instructional programs that are aimed at teaching basic skills, game strategies, and competition rules consistent with current USA Water Polo rules & regulations. Our 18+ program is a drop-in, pick-up style program that allows players of varying swimming/water polo experience to participate in pick-up style scrimmages throughout the program season.
What equipment do I need to purchase or wear?
For our 10U, 14U, and 18U programs, equipment costs are built into the registration price. All your athlete needs to furnish is a bathing suit. Traditionally, water polo men wear briefs; however, jammers will also suffice. Board shorts and swimming trunks are discouraged due to their excess fabric interfering with proper technique. Women also have specific water polo suits designed sport specific needs; however, a competition swim suit will work.
If you are interested in purchasing a water polo specific swim suit, please use our affiliate store at http://www.swimoutlet.com/lakeridgewaterpolo. 10% of all purchases go to new equipment for the team!
How many players will you accept into the program?
Due to space restrictions, we are limiting our 10U, 14U, and 18U programs to 30 participants each. Our 18+ drop-in program is unlimited.
