Swim Groups by Age and Proficiency

The age groups for our practices and competitions are as follows:

Developmental Group — Also known as Sea Pups

  • Swimmers who cannot swim any legal strokes across the pool

  • Generally aged 8 and under, but some of these kids are older but are new to swimming 

 

 

 

Age 8 and Under — This group is made up of swimmers age 8 or under

  • Can swim at least one legal stroke: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke [25 meters] 

  • Are therefore eligible to compete in meets

Ages 9-10 — This group must be proficient in all 4 strokes, including butterfly [25 meters] 

 

Ages 11-12 — This group must be proficient in all 4 strokes and be able to swim the following:

  • ​25-meter butterfly

  • 50-meter backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle

  • 100-meter individual medley (IM)​

Ages 13-14 — This group must be proficient in all 4 strokes and be able to swim the following:​

  • ​50-meters for all individual strokes

  • 200-meter individual medley (IM)

 

 

 

Ages 15-18 — This group must be proficient in all 4 strokes and be able to swim the following:​

  • ​50-meters for all individual strokes

  • 200-meter individual medley (IM)
