2019 Tennis Team Coaches

Sarah Newman, Head Coach

Head Coach Sarah Newman is a Gonzaga University graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Science and a Master’s Degree in Teaching. She teaches Science at Kennedy Catholic High School during the school year, where she is also the Assistant Coach for the girls’ tennis team. Sarah comes from a passionate tennis family. Her father is a former tennis coach, and they currently play together on a mixed doubles USTA team. Sarah is a USTA certified coach who has taught tennis in both Seattle and Spokane. She played competitive tennis in high school and club tennis at Gonzaga. Sarah is excited to be the new Head Coach at the Arb and improve both children’s and adult tennis at the club.  Her goal for Arbor Heights tennis is to assist each player in growing, developing and gaining a passion for the game of tennis. She loves the game of tennis and it’s one of her great passions in life to share that joy with others. Sarah always strives to help players feel more confident every time they walk on the court through fundamental and strategy development.

Sarah’s’ favorite tennis shot is the high backhand volley. Her favorite professional tennis player is Rafael Nadal, and her favorite food is pizza. newmans@kennedyhs.org

Brendan Stoll, Assistant Coach

Brendan began his tennis career at Arbor Heights when he was 6 years old. He started playing tennis competitively when he was 14 and practiced at the Amy Yee tennis center. A year later, Brendan started practicing in the high performance class at The Boeing Employee Tennis Center. He played on Kennedy Catholic’s Varsity tennis team for all four years he attended high school. Brendan and his doubles partner qualified for the Washington State Championship Tournament and finished 3rd overall for 4A.  This will be Brendan’s fourth year coaching at Arbor Heights. Brendan attended his first year at Gonzaga University where he studied Mechanical Engineering.

Christine Barton, Assistant Coach

Christine has been a member of Arbor Heights for 15 years and she began playing tennis at the Arb at age 6.  She has enjoyed playing varsity tennis at Holy Names all four years of her high school career.  During Christine’s junior year, she went to state in doubles and placed 8th at which time the Holy Names team won state.  Last year, Christine played # 1 doubles and made it to districts.  Christine attended her first year at the University of Iowa as a business student.  She plays on The University of Iowa club tennis team and is going to Arizona for nationals in April. This is Christine’s 4th year coaching at Arbor Heights and she looks forward to coaching again! 

Christine’s favorite shot is the overhead volley and her favorite tennis player is Serena Williams.  Her favorite food is a vegetarian sandwich from subway.  chrisbarton@UIowa.edu

Fiona Scanlan, Assistant Coach

Fiona has been a member at the Arb her whole life. She went to her older brother’s swim meets when she was just 2 weeks old.  Fiona started playing tennis at the age of 7 and began playing at Arbor Heights and hitting with her Mom. She started getting more serious about tennis at age 12 and started playing at the Boeing Tennis Club and playing USTA tennis tournaments. Fiona played doubles at Seattle Prep and won the Metro Championship with her team in her final season (2018). She played on Varsity for three years and was a captain her Senior year. Fiona attended her first year at Washington State University this year where she is studying Fashion Merchandising. Outside of school, Fiona loves practicing with the WSU club tennis team, cheering on the Cougs, and spending time with her sorority sisters. Fiona has been coaching at Arbor Heights the past three summers as well as working at Nordstrom. She loves working with the kids and spending time at the pool.

Lauren Jergens, Assistant Coach

Lauren started playing tennis at Arbor Heights when she was eight years old and began club and tournament play at age thirteen. She graduated from Kennedy Catholic High School in 2018 and varsity lettered in tennis all four years. Lauren placed 7th in state her junior year and 6th in state her senior year at Kennedy, where she also made first team all-league three of her years playing. Lauren currently attends Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona and is studying Psychology. She is a part of the GCU Club Tennis A team and placed first in the bronze bracket at the Southwest Sectionals Tournament this past Spring. Lauren enjoys playing tennis regularly, road trips with friends and watching movies. This is her second year coaching at Arbor.

Wyatt Keppler, Assistant Coach

Wyatt has been an Arb member for 12 years where he started playing tennis at age 8. He has played on the tennis team at AHSTC ever since. This year, Wyatt started his first year at Washington State University where he is studying Financial Market Economics. In his free time, he plays for the Competitive Club Tennis Team as well as coach his friends in the sport as well. Last year, Wyatt placed Top 10 at the State Tennis Tournament in May 2018. 

Wyatt’s favorite shot is the forehand volley and his favorite professional tennis player is Rafael Nadal. Wyatt’s favorite food is the Jack’s Special from Husky Deli in West Seattle. wyattk@comcast.net
