Sandston Stingrays Swim Team

The Sandston Pool has been home to the Sandston Stingrays swim team for over 40 years! We are among the 20 teams that make up JRAC. Swimmers are not required to be members of the Pool in order to join the swim team.

 

The Sandston Stingrays swim team is open to youth swimmers of all abilities who are capable of completing at least one length of the pool (25 meters) each of Freestyle and Backstroke. Our coaches work with swimmers to develop the four main swim strokes (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke), as well as build endurance and speed.

 

During the swim season we compete in six regular season meets, three home meets hosted at Sandston and three away meets hosted at other area pools.

Having fun is an important part of the Sandston Stingrays summer swim program. We believe in a safe and healthy environment that encourages each swimmer to do their best, recognizes individual improvements, and provides fun activities for kids and families.

Whether your swimmer is just learning to swim or is a year-round swimmer, Sandston is a great place to grow for the summer season!

 

Mini Rays (formerly Pre-Swim Team)

Sandston Stingrays Mini Rays program is for children ages 4-7 years old who are comfortable with the water and are ready to learn the basics of swimming such as freestyle and backstroke while building endurance. Swimmers will receive in-the-water coaching instruction designed to help them become confident. Coaches teach our Mini Ray swimmers proper stroke technique, stroke-appropriate breathing, and start dives. The Sandston Stingrays Mini Rays program is not a swim lesson program. This is a developmental team designed to prepare children for the swim team.

Goals for the Mini Rays by the end of the season include:

  • Swim a 25 meter lap independently
  • Gain confidence in the water
  • Prepare for the swim team through practice & games
  • Have fun and love swimming
  • Feel like a member of the Stingrays Swim Team

All Mini Rays will have until the end of the first week of practices to withdraw. Coaches will touch base with the Mini Ray parents at the end of the first week to talk through goals and comfort levels with the swimmers. Swimmers participating in Mini Rays may be elevated to swim team participation level at the coaches’ discretion during the course of the season.

Practices will start Tuesday, May 30th through July 14th and will end with a Mini Meet after the team's last swim meet.

School Practice Schedule: 

  • Mon-Thurs 6:15-7:00PM.

Summer Practice Schedule: 

  • Monday & Friday 8-9AM
  • Wednesday & Thursday 6:00-6:45PM.

*All practices are weather permitting and will not be made up if canceled.

Details of the Mini Rays:

  • This is for younger swimmers who are comfortable in the water but not quite ready to compete on the swim team.
  • Mini Rays swimmers will not have a volunteer commitment on the Stingrays team; however, that does not excuse any volunteer commitment owed by a family due to other family members that are on the Sandston Stingrays team.
  • The Stingrays Head and Assistant Coaches will run the Mini Rays practices.
  • Members of the Mini Rays are invited to attend all Stingrays parties and events and will be in the official Stingrays team picture.
  • Mini Rays will also be invited to join the end of season party and will receive a lanyard and Mini Rays pin.

Member Rates

  • $85 for the first swimmer
  • $80 for the second swimmer
  • $75 for each additional swimmer

Non-Member Rate (*We offer a swim team trial membership for new members, see our membership page for more information.)

  • $140

​*A late fee of $50 per family will be charged for registrations after April 30, 2023.

    • 5:30-6:15pm: 8 & unders and 9-10s

    • ​8-9am: 11 and up
    • 9-10am: 10 and under
