Chad Gusler Head Coach

Coach Chad is returning to Westover as head coach for this summer’s swim season! He's been our head coach for six years, and an assistant coach for three, He has helped coach for the VAST/Virginia Gators club team and is the current swim coach for the EMU women’s varsity triathlon team. Chad swam competitively in high school, mostly free and back with a bit of butterfly here and there, and, in 2016, qualified in the 1650 freestyle for USA Masters national meet. Chad teaches composition and creative writing at EMU, where he is an associate professor of English. He has an MFA in creative writing from Seattle Pacific University.

His coaching philosophy is simple: swimmers should work hard and have fun while learning all the ins and outs of swimming, and he hopes to create lifetime swimmers.

Amelie Sheppard U8 and Jr. Coaches

Coach Amelie grew up on swim teams in southern Louisiana. Giving private swim lessons, coaching at summer camps, and lifeguarding were all a regular part of her life. Swimming has been a lifelong companion in both her physical and mental discipline. Now settled in the valley with three small kids and her husband Jeremy, she is excited to work with the Westover Waves team to cultivate the skills to make swimming a lifelong activity for other youngsters. Amelie's favorite strokes are freestyle and backstroke. She is a professional goggle adjuster and swim cap flipper-onner. Her biggest swimming inspiration is Coach Bill Babcock, a legend who taught her how to swim in 1992 and then taught her own kids 25 years later in the same pool.

Mindy Schwartz Morning Coach

Coach Mindy is happiest when she is near the water or watching inspirational sports movies. She graduated from JMU where she played water polo after swimming in high school. Both of her daughters love swimming for the Waves.  Time spent on the pool deck has become a favorite pastime for her whole family.

Ciara Hampton Morning Coach

Ciara Hampton grew up in Harrisonburg and was a member of the Westover Waves for 11 years, also swimming
competitively for VAST and Harrisonburg High School. She is now the head coach for the Swim & Dive team at HHS. She
recently graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor’s in Exercise Physiology and is starting nursing school in
the fall. Now that she is back in the Valley, she enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and puppies. She looks
forward to her first year coaching for the Waves and helping the swimmers find a love for swimming the same way she
did as a kid.
