Position Title: Assistant Coach/Dryland Coach


Position Description/Summary/Duties:  

The Assistant Coach will serve as part of the coaching staff and will be devoted to developing, sustaining and building the team through excellence in coaching.

Examples of Job Duties - 

  • Supporting the GHCKRT mission by supervising all aspects of practices, regattas and other team activities.

  • Ensuring the safety of athletes at all times. 

  • Overseeing the conduct of the athletes and ensuring consistency with team culture.  

  • Act as knowledge expert and ambassador for the club in the sport of paddling

  • Supports recruiting and development of athletes.  

  • Equipment maintenance and storage

  • Interacting and communicating with parents, board members, athletes and the general public in a positive manner.  


General Qualifications:

  • English proficiency and at least 18 years of age. 

  • Ability to solve problems and handle issues of a complicated / complex nature and create solutions to problems before they are presented to management  

  • Use creativity and attention to detail while handling multiple tasks and meeting assigned deadlines.  

  • Ability to interpret policies and guidelines (with training)

  • Ability to lift and move equipment and materials up to 50 pounds

  • Must have a valid driver’s license 

  • Must pass a Background Check (criminal and driving)

  • Enjoy working with people and contributing to a pleasant work environment

  • Must be a self-starter and able to develop projects that further GHCKRT’s mission. 


Position Qualifications:

  • Must have experience in coaching and/or teaching.  

  • Must be willing to learn technical knowledge in the sport of Sprint Canoe and Kayak.  

  • Exhibit the interpersonal and organizational skills necessary to work with a wide range of staff, athletes, parents, race organizers, officials and volunteers.

  • Possess the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.  

  • Agree to comply with and be bound by the safe sport rules, policies and procedures of the U.S. Center for Safe Sport and to submit, without reservation or condition, to the jurisdiction of the U.S. Center for Safe Sport for the resolution of any alleged violations of those rules, policies and procedures, as they may be amended from time to time.

  • Comply with all anti-doping rules of the ICF and of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (“USADA”), including the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing (“USADA Protocol”) and all other policies and rules adopted by the ICF and USADA.

  • WA state boaters license within 30 days of hire

  • CPR and First Aid within 60 days of hire 

  • Level 1 ICF coach qualification within 1 year of hire 

  • Participate and pass in-house training on chase boat operation

  • Must become active coach member of American Canoe Association


Additional Information:

  • This position is part-time hourly. hourly DOE

  • Typical work schedule: 

    • Approximately 1-2 hours per day, 2-6x per week.  Times to be determined by staff needs.  

    • Weekday and weekend travel (domestic/international) required, minimum 3 events per year

    • Skansie Park/Ancich Park - Gig Harbor

    • Other locations around the greater Gig Harbor area.

Founded in 2002, Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team (GHCKRT) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization serving the broader Gig Harbor community.  The purpose of GHCKRT is to:

Provide Opportunities: Support and nurture the athletes and a competitive racing program that provide the members of the greater Gig Harbor community the opportunity to participate in paddling activities, regardless of disabilities, gender, national origin, religion, age, sexual orientation, immigration status, or ability level.    

  1. Lead: Foster leadership in the local, national, and international community and provide leadership training for the competitive racing program and the athletes who represent Gig Harbor.  

  1. Achieve Competitive Success: Sustain an excellent, competitive program for youth and adults in the sport of canoe/kayak racing.    

  1. Serve:  Encourage volunteer parent, coach and athlete service at all times on the team, in the community, and on the national/international level.

To intentionally encourage and teach athletes through challenges and struggling to achieve.
