COVID-19 and Summer 2020 update

Susan Buchman

CSC Members:

We wanted to reach out again and provide another update concerning COVID-19 and CSC this summer.  While the situation is still developing, below is our current plan for this pool season as of April 21, 2020.  As you know, things can change quickly, so we will continue to monitor and update you as we get new information:
  • POOL OPENING:  CSC will follow Allegheny County Health Department guidelines for opening the pool this season.  As of now, the County has not made any decisions on pool openings for the summer.  Our management is keeping in contact with the County and expects a decision by the end of this month or early May.  Thus, while we are tentatively staying on track to open Memorial Day weekend on our regular schedule, we will update the members if and when any delays are announced.  Right now, our best estimate is that the season will likely be delayed until the weekend of June 13/14.
  • SWIM TEAM. Our swim league has not made a decision about the 2020 season, and we will not be registering swimmers or collecting fees for swim team until a decision is made. Possible options include normal operations, a shortened/delayed season start, or cancellation. We will continue to share information from the league as we receive it. Any questions about swim team can be directed to [email protected].
  • MEMBERSHIP DUES DEADLINE:  In consideration of the on-going uncertainty over season-opening, we are extending the dues deadline until May 15.  This will allow us additional time to get a better sense of what the season will look like this year.
  • MEMBERSHIP CREDITS FOR SHORTENED SEASON:  If we are not able to open on time, we plan to issue a partial credit on dues for the shortened season.  In this case, the credit will be applied to reduce next season's dues payment.
  • MEMBERSHIP DUES REFUNDS FOR CANCELLED SEASON:  If in the worst case scenario we are not permitted to open at all, we will issue dues refunds for this season.  Given our current financial reserves, we are in position to cover the maintenance costs of the pool for this season to be able to open again next year.  Hopefully this does not happen, but we have discussed and planned for this possibility.
  • RESTRICTIONS ON POOL USAGE:  At this time, we do not know whether any social distancing or other restrictions will be placed on the pool when it is operating.  However, we will comply with all relevant restrictions implemented by the authorities.  While we don't know what restrictions, if any, those will be; based on the experience of the last month, they could include things like limiting the number of people on the pool grounds, additional spacing for tables and chairs, and additional cleaning and disinfecting requirements.  Once we get more clarity on any changes to our operations, we will provide a full report on the steps we will be taking to operate the pool in compliance with any new COVID-19-related restrictions.
  • MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES:  Our working policy right now is to operate the pool as close to normal consistent with any restrictions and guidance from the relevant public health authorities.  We understand and respect that individual members may have heightened health vulnerability or different views on safe practices during this unprecedented time.  While the management and staff are committed to providing a safe environment for everyone, members will ultimately be responsible to make their own individual decisions based on their particular circumstances as to how they enjoy the pool this summer.  We ask that each member respect the decisions of others as to appropriate conduct and personal interaction.
We will continue to provide updates via e-mail, website, and social media.  If you have any specific questions, please email us at   [email protected].  If your question relates to issues that will affect all members (pool opening, dues policies, etc.), we will address those in future all-member communications.  It will take a collective effort by management and members to have safe and fun summer in the current environment.  We ask that everyone be patient with each other as we figure out together how to navigate this difficult season.
Stay safe and healthy.
We hope to see you soon at the pool!
