RENO News - 2/17/21

Ryan Evans

Hi All,

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. We are back to our normal schedule. We will remain on this schedule until March 27. Then all practices, except the weekday Mini RENO and weekday National AM practices, will shift to Idlewild Pool. I will be sending the new practice schedule in the coming weeks.

Good Luck to Coach Benny

In addition to being a RENO coach, Benny is a member of the University of Nevada women’s swim team. The Wolf Pack and Benny will be competing this week at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Las Vegas. Swim fast, Benny!

Arizona Meet Recap

25 Reno Aquatic Club swimmers participated in the Mesa Aquatic Club President’s Day Invite over the weekend in Mesa, Arizona.

It was quite the roller coaster to be able to race. The opportunity to attend a meet in Arizona popped up just two weeks prior to the meet. Booking travel was a challenge since it was a three day weekend and such short notice. It also appeared that Phoenix was the epicenter for youth sports with the airport and hotel being filled with athletes competing in several other tournaments throughout the area.

One week before the meet, I received notification that the venue decided last minute not to allow any out of state competitors. I had to break the bad news to our swimmers that the meet was canceled.

The next day, I received a message from Mesa Aquatic Club. They were hosting a meet the same weekend, and they would be able to accommodate us. A meet was back on!

Despite the stressful and challenging lead-up to the meet, RENO swimmers had an outstanding three days of swimming. 75% of our swims were best times, several RENO top-10 times were recorded, and may new time standards were achieved.

Great job to Ian Belflower for setting two Reno Aquatic Club records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. His time of 58.80 in the 100 broke Tim Russell’s record of 59.61 set in 1994. Ian’s 200 was a 2:07.71. This broke Thomas Brown’s 2:08.42 set in 2000.

Congratulations to Lucy Platz and Aidan Pflieger for achieving new USA Swimming senior time standards. Lucy made her first Western Zone Senior cuts in the 100 breast and 200 IM. Aidan recorded his first Futures cut in the 1650 freestyle. This also qualifies him for the Open Water Junior National Championships.

Here’s a recap for each swimmer:

Elena Aramini — 100% best times including nearly a 3-second drop in the 200 back

This team has definitely made tremendous progress. A highlight of the meet was overhearing a swimmer from another team tell her friend, “Wow! RENO has some fast swimmers.”

I can’t wait for more swimmers to have the opportunity to race at a meet. Hopefully this will be sooner than later!
