RENO News - 4/8/21

Ryan Evans

Good Morning,

I hope everyone is having a great week. Please read through today’s email for important Reno Aquatic Club information.

Change to Saturday Practice for Mini Groups

I made an error on the times for Saturday practice for our Mini RENO and Mini RENO Plus. For the next three Saturdays, both groups will be at Northwest from 9 - 9:30 AM. I apologize for the change.

The schedule for the other groups on Saturdays in April is as follows:

Pre-Senior - 7:30 - 9 AM

Blue - 8 - 9 AM

Mini RENO - 9 - 9:30 AM

Mini RENO Plus - 9 - 9:30 AM

All Saturday practices will be at NORTHWEST for April.

Sunday Practice

In April, National and Senior will have practice at IDLEWILD from 8 - 10 AM.

Welcome Coach Nikki

I am excited to announce a new addition to the RENO coaching staff! Coach Nikki has joined the team and will start coaching our Blue and Mini RENO Plus groups. Nikki has an extensive background as a swimmer and coach. I am looking forward to her being a positive contribution to the team.

Coach Benny has taken over the Silver group. I am excited for her to be the coach for this new group.

As we settle into the spring practice schedule, we may make a few adjustments with the lead coach for each group. We will communicate any changes

I am very happy with our current staff, and I truly feel we have the best staff in the area. Our coaches experience, enthusiasm, positive attitudes, and professionalism are helping develop a bright future for Reno Aquatic Club.

Group Meetings

We will be doing parent meetings for each group starting the week of April 19. I will send out a schedule for the meetings next week.

Summer Practice Schedule

I do not know what our summer practice schedule will look like yet. The deadline for swim teams to submit lane requests to the City of Reno is this Friday. My goal is to have the schedule finalized by early May.

TYR Pro Swim Series - Mission Viejo

RENO’s Emma Karam will be competing this weekend at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo, CA. The meet will be feature several Olympians including Caeleb Dressel, Lilly King, Katie Ledecky, and many more. Emma will be swimming the 100 and 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and 200 freestyle.

The schedule of this meet is unique. Traditionally, in a prelims/finals meet, prelims are in the morning then if a swimmer qualifies for finals, he/she returns that evening to swim the race again at night. At this summer’s Olympics, prelims will be conducted in the evening then the finals will take place the following morning. In order to prepare Team USA for the different format at the Olympics, this weekend’s meet will mimic the flipped schedule.

Prelims will be live-streamed on USA Swimming’s website and the finals will be on the Olympic Channel and NBC Sports. Click here for more information.

Good luck and swim fast, Emma!

RENO Gamble Meet – June 18-20 at Idlewild

RENO’s annual summer swim meet, the RENO Gamble, is set to return in 2021. The team has been hosting this meet since 1982. It requires a lot of help from RENO families in order to have a successful event. This year, with all the restrictions, we’ll need everyone to pitch in. Here’s a message from our meet director, Teri Galvin, with more information:

"This meet will look a lot different that our meets in the past and we will need everyone to help to make it successful.  There are lots of opportunities to get involved:

As the meet gets closer, we will post job-sign-ups for the meet on the website (filling timing chairs, assisting with managing the entrances of the pool, set-up, tear-down, etc).  ***We hope that each family will sign up for one shift during each session that their child is swimming.

***Current state directives require anyone who works at the meet to have a negative Covid test.  While we are hoping this directive changes soon, if you happen to get a Covid test, please save your results as they will meet this current requirement.

If anyone has any connections with restaurants that can provide boxed lunches for our coaches and officials (we will need lunches each day of the meet), please let me know.  Discounts and donations are much appreciated!

If you are an experienced parent and feel ready to explore stepping up, please let me know.  We are looking for parents who would be willing to shadow some of our meet leads to eventually take over the leadership of those positions in future meets as many of the current leads have older swimmers who will be graduating soon.

Please consider helping out in any way you can…I am so thankful for my experiences volunteering with this team over the years and being an important part of supporting my kids’ dreams.  If you have any questions or want to discuss stepping up into a leadership role, please feel free to reach out to me anytime. You can reach me at [email protected] or at (775) 848-9487."
